e015.gif If you can spare an hour of your time this weekend why don't you join the Big Garden Bird Watch? e015.gife015.gif

All you have to do is sit for an hour where you can see your garden, or go to the local park and just count the maximum number of bird species that land there over the course of an hour (in trees counts as well as on bird tables and, of course, on the ground). For example, if three sparrows land at the same time in the hour the answer is three. If one sparrow lands, flies away, then two sparrows then the maximum number would be two …..see what I mean?

If you go onto the RSPB website, link below, you can download a form that helps you to identify and carry out the survey. Then you just submit your results on line.

http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/?gclid

It's great to do with children and grandchildren or just on your own ….we're doing it, with a pot of coffee and crusty bacon cobs.

Hope you get a chance to join in. :D
Love, Legs x

We're doing ours over lunch - hope the squirrels stay away otherwise it'll be a case like Daylily.

You guys must have big gardens to get all those birds.

Post my results later as a matter of interest.

A bullfinch, how pretty! May I correct you on one thing though DD, from what I understand there's no such thing as a seagull  There are black headed gulls, herring gulls, common gulls, etc. but no seagull...... bit of trivia for you.

OK, I saw some gulls which might have been herring or common, but not black-headed. Is that better?

Hubby spent all morning happily engaged in encouraging more birds into the garden by hanging loads more feeders.

I think he was pleased with the results, tho I can't remember all the numbers as they are written down downstairs and I am upstairs

    Coal tit
Starling x 10 (disappointing as last week we had 30 at once!)
    blackbird
    sparrow
    dunnock
    chaffinch
    collared dove

shame the wren, robin, blue & great tits didn't show up, as they are regular visitors most days.

    Hi Legs,

I am really lucky.... Mine is quite a count cus well i live in the wild really....

Several herring gulls who may never have seen the sea  10 or more cus the come as a group.....

2 wrens who live near and are often just outside the window  i love hearing them.

5 black bids, i love their songs

So mamy blue tits and coal tits I kinda lost count,

6 magpies..... not the nicest of birds..... Slipper boy chases them

    3 buzzards,

a flock of starlings... like Wonky they mass here and then fly to roost.... i like starling, hand reared a few and they are the easiest ones to rear! they also become a bit like homing starling's for a bit

4 Thrushes, Watched one for a while and he was fairly tame.... privilege to see them go about their daily thing eh?

6 crows ... we don't talk about them......

7 Sparrow of the hedge variety,

my Robbin... comes and tells m,e they need their feeders topped up and he comes to 'help' do the chicken house..... well he quite likes corn.

Then I lost count.... but Legs I am privileged to be able to live amongst the wildlife and we all rub along well... i do have cats but they are very good about birds.

You take care my friend and tis good to see so many birds ..... oh a couple of the sparrow are house ones as well

    luv

Cris who should try and get some sleep  xx

Why oh why is my garden full of birds this morning - happens every time we do the bird watch ..............suppose they're count-shy and hide till it's all over.

You guys are so lucky to have such a variety and great numbers. I always enjoy the Bird Watch though especially when I imagine people all over the country doing it.

    For garden bird addicts…
Great to see that so many of you got involved with RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch.

BGBW provides an excellent snapshot in time of what is happening with birds in our gardens. As any armchair birdwatcher will know, however, much changes in our birdlife through the seasons...

For example, see the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch results for

    Goldfinch:
    House Sparrow:

BTO Garden BirdWatch started in 1995 and is the largest year-round survey of garden birds in the world. If you find yourself gazing out of the window for at least a few minutes during most weeks then you can easily get involved. It is great fun and your simple observations will help the BTO to conduct important scientific analyses.

New participants get a great new book, a quarterly magazine called Bird Table, and access to friendly and informative advice from staff.

    For more information visit:

The BTO will be happy to send you a free enquiry pack, ask for the Garden Ecology Team.

    Happy garden birdwatching!
