Does anyone get high-lighted words in a different colour when they post. I often find key words such as bed or credit appear in a different colour on my posts. On my last post about Lush after I posted Credit and Credit card appeared in green.
I am wondering if these are false links to other sites and I have been hi-jacked!
I am also having trouble logging on and today took 10 attempts before I was accepted.

Never had that either, sorry tkachev. It sounds a bit rum tho - I know very, very little about computery stuff but could something possibly be amiss? DD

    Logged in fine this time.
Hi Tink I have had to put in numbers and letter code too but still got refused. Sometimes it is fine, sometimes okay.
I think it is something to do with my laptop which is why none of you get it. I had a problem at Christmas where I was making a payment and got logged onto another site without me noticing half way through making a credit card payment, after clicking on a high-lighted word(I know this because I retraced my steps). They then sent me an Email thanking me for joining their scheme at X amount. They had all my details. I hadn't even been on their webpage. Luckily there was a cooling off period and after many attempts I finally got confirmation it was all cancelled.
Okay I will just have to get used to it as long as it doesn't affect anyone else.
Thanks DD. I think it is just me and glad to read others aren't having same trouble.
Linda I will post on tech thread if I have any more trouble logging on. Cheers.

    Hi Elizabeth

I had a lot of trouble trying to log on last week. I have had trouvé this week when I tried to pop in to see you all. I had to keep putting the security code in and it kept saying it was wrong.

I ended up changing my logging in number and they changed it for me.

That is what happened to me Trish. I posted slowly and carefully but it insisted I was wrong.

was just going to recommend a similar thing Del, we use AVG, very good and totally free. You can upgrade if you wish but are not pestered into doing so at all.... Great but if anti virus kit.. Also should have some form of anti spyware too... Spybot search and destroy is the one we use, again, free to download... Both available from cnet...
We have ours set to run automatically each day..

Hope you get it sorted Elizabeth

I, like Tony, have downloaded AVG free virus software and also Spybot Search and Destroy, also free. I schedule a virus check everyday - it doesn't protect you from everything out there but at least it's some security.

    Hi Tink,

Yep that is what happened to me. Is it just us?
I have a problem in that my son likes to download things and also he tries to change things. He is currently wanting the Windows 98 pictures and sounds.
I have a friend who fixes the major problems, I have had some naughty sites come up and that has really angered me with the children seeing things! I don't ask for their porn rubbish.

Seems like it could be virus/spyware. The thing about free antivirus programs are that you have to remember to update and then manually scan rather than have a 'live' check (available if you pay). But as always, this is better than nothing. The other problem is that people forget to update them and a new threat may get through.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials updated daily, which is free and monitors as you go, but also a full scan is run once a week. I then update/run Malwarebytes freebie version, this double checks my security to be safer.

I have used AVG (and there are many others) in the past and found them straightforward to use. However, in my opinion Registry Cleaners should be used with caution and only if you know what you are doing, as the last thing you need is a corrupt Registry. (The Registry is the system file which keeps track of all the programs and how they are accessed by the computer, any problems with that file and things soon stop working. It can get 'bloated' if you install lots of programs and then uninstall them, otherwise there is minimal gain by cleaning it. Antivirus programs will normally check it for viruses/spyware anyway).

As for Service Packs for XP, they should be installed, firstly you install SP2 and then SP3 afterwards as they both contain security updates and system bug repairs, so these will help your computer run smoother and less likely to be subject to spyware. And of course, they are FREE. Having said that, SP3 had problems when first issued, but these were corrected and SP3 is now OK.

You may have noticed the sprinkling of my favourite word, 'free'. And if it ain't free then cheap will just have to do instead.

The forum has been updated which meant delayed access.

If you look at the top of the page you should notice the new heading. The BETA heading has gone and except for a bit of rogue programming just by the logo (-->) it looks far better.

    Thanks Joseph,

I have a friend who runs a company dealing with computer problems. I always ask to get the best security installed but he says there is no need as the free stuff is good enough. Looking at AVG i have the 2011 version and it scans and updates on its own and both were done last night. I scan using the IObit security 360 on a daily basis.
Everything was fine until I joined facebook!

Nice thought about my own techie thread, thank you folks.

But I would keep things as they are, people such as Delboy, and tjt6768 (Tony) post excellent, knowledgeable replies too and I don't want people to start to rely just on my input.

If you post a query on the Chit-Chat forum and put the problem into the heading then someone will pick it up and give a practical answer. Remember that I may not always be available.

    Hi Val,

This used to happen to me when I started using 'Firefox' as my Web Browser but it did stop when the forum was updated. Not much help, I know, but it might be to do with which Web Browser you use.

My cursor never jumped before whatever they did recently - now when I insert one of AC's emoticons my cursor leaps back to the beginning of the message. I must admit I find this irksome (probably because it is such a tiny fault). DD
