Fail gluten free diet...

When i was diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis(IA) in Jan 09 i read up a lot about alternative remedies and I found some articles about gluten & arthritis, so I decided it wouldn't hurt to try a gluten free diet to see if it helped me.
Well, it did, but i'm not sure if it directly helped my IA or not. However, my whole life i had stomach problems and after 2 months gluten free all that went away, my gut felt 'normal' so i figured it helped with my IA cuz my gut was better at getting energy etc from my food...
Anways, so I remain on GF diet since it helped me in some way... but I think i've failed since November 10!! My dad visited and showed me his recipe for broth like he sells in his sandwich shop. It was yummie and full of veggies and really good for ya... so i started making it and I've had it as my lunch very frequently since then (made big pot and froze it!). Well I only thought yesterday to check the ingredients of the broth mix... didn't realise it had Barely in it!! Whoops! I just thought my tummy was windy because it wasnt used to all that yummie veg!
So from today.. i will be Gluten Free.... and maybe it'll help again with my IA cuz for about 4 months i've felt like my meds haven't been controlling this very well.
I'm so silly

Have you tried the Genius GF bread?
I think that's the one product that kept me on a gluten free diet... I couldn't stomach any of the other bread :-?
Do you know u can claim £1 off from their website (it is expensive bread!)? Also the Dietary Specialist website sends free samples for gluten and diary free
Since i'm not cealiac it can be expensive all this gluten free stuff... for Xmas my parents made me a hamper of gluten free goodies... (all gone already ofc) seems wasted now tho since i wasnt 100% gluten free :x0 -
delboy,
sorry for delay i been too busy at work and too tired in the evenings to come online much to chat
I haven't yet looked at gluten free baking, but oh i love to bake - every sunday when i was living with my parents I would bake all sorts for our Sunday teamy mum was jealous of my pastry!
I'd love to have the insight to a good GF pastry0 -
GF bread mix made by Laucke, can be bought in Lakeland or on the internet from Lakeland. Each pack includes two packets of bread mix. Price £2.79 or thereabouts. If you do not purchase the Laucke loaf tin, one packet mix will fill a 2 lb and a l lb loaf tin. It is very easy to make, you just add water and it makes a batter and is poured into the loaf tin(s) and left to rise to double its size somewhere warm and then baked in the oven. It is lovely and tastes like "normal" bread. My son is over the moon that his nan found this bread mix for him!

I am also gluten free alone with my lad. Never went to the doctors juts stumble onto it really. Years of a really bad stomach, pains and nasties i donot want to go into. Within days of giving up my whole life change. No falling sleep, loads of energy and best of all no stomach ache. I am really lucky as i have a gurka shop near by and can buy rice and maze flour really cheap.
As for the shopping what a nightmare. Aldi are great for labelling goods and you can buy some tasty ready meals...Eating out is a real pain so tend not to go out much.
Wheat free baking takes a bit of getting use to and now my whole family eats the cakes i make. I use different flours to make up my flour mix . I mix potato flour small bag with rice flour and maize and sometimes put gram and cornflour in flour in as well. The cakes are best eaten straight away or the next day but in my house do not last long. Gluten free pastry needs to be a little more moist and leave it to stand (donot forget the zanthan powder this binds the pastry together.) I cook by the look and see if it looks right method. have made some awful mistakes but that is half the fun. Not yet worked out how to make good yorkshire puds yet so if someone out there has any ideas please let me know.0 -
thanks everyone!
I'm gonna have to experiment and try these things out0 -
Not sure whether you will know this but grated cheese in the packs has gluten in....found that out the hard way and oats are rolled in flour but i am sure you can buy them fresh and keep them in the fridge.0

Buckwheat flour makes basic flatbreads which my son likes.

Gluten-free products are all very well but they're often SO much more unhealthy, full of salt, sugar and other additives to make up the taste, so be careful.
I don't like Genius bread - Warburton's gluten free is MUCH nicer.
I don't buy many gluten free products, we only have gluten free flour and pasta at home and sometimes I buy a loaf of bread, but mostly I cook from fresh, have jacket potatoes or rice as starch/ carbs.
Occasionally I crack and eat a gluten biscuit or slice of pizza but I do feel it the next day... I am only human after all and takeaways are hard to resist...

I didnt try the warburtons bread yet, will have a go on your recomendation.. and u are right about gluten free being unhealthy... im counting my calories/fat atm and now i dont want to eat the genuis bread every day... 2 slices, 20g of fat.. so now thats gonna be a treat for me!
THanks for ur reply0 -
Must admit i don't have a weight problem and have never really looked at the cal etc on the products. I am the other extreme i have problems keeping weight on. AND NO it is not great at all.0

Carly, you're welcome - feel free to PM me, I have loads of ideas of what to eat...
As for putting the weight on, I've struggled with that too, recently! When I had a bad flare up at the end of last year, my appetite went completely and I've dropped at least a stone (I never weigh myself so I don't know exactly) I don't lie being this size, I feel a bit bony and friends and family have agreed it doesn't suit me. I liked being a curvy size 12, I'm now barely a 10 and confused my jeans with my daughters- that's never right, is it??
That's why I'm so pleased to find Warburtons gluten free bread, it means I will actually be eating carbs so might put some weight back ON.
