Hi there, I am a newby and I have severe arthritis in my hip and not to bad in may back.

Can anyone tell me whether bruising and it feels like on the affected side constant pulling of muscles all down that leg, have any of you experienced this, I am finding it hard to get all information on athritis and
and wondered if anyone else experiences this problem.

I am on Ibuprofen and stomach tabs, not that they help much at all.

Would love to hear from anyone.

Karen

Hello constable, welcome to the forum tho I am sorry you have had to find us. What sort of arthritis do you have? There are many different kinds, I think the most common are OA and RA. Do you actually have bruises or does your leg just feel tender/sore? Are you using a stick to help you with walking? If not, you could just be holding yourself very awkwardly, as a way to minimise any pain or discomfort as you move and this can cause further aches and pains as your other joints are thrown out of kilter. Ibuprophen is a pain duller/anti-inflammatory (I think), are the stomach tablets you mention protectors (eg Omeprazole or Lanzaprole)? There isn't much more that can be done pill-wise for OA (if that is what you have). I hope you have a better day today. I wish you well. DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

    Hi Karen,

Welcome to posting through sorry you have the condition.

I am the other way around and have chronic in my back and 2nd or 3rd in the hips. I do get the feeling of bruised all down one leg if the side its on is active but am also lucky cus the hips have lost a lot of movement but I don't have the pain from them I should have cus of damaged nerves in the spine.

I wonder who you are seeing there? See those tablets alone may well not be enough and has anyone talked about replacements yet?

I really think you could do with seeing an ortho if you haven't done so already and maybe talk about a bit stronger pain relief for bad days? nice to meet you. Cris x

    Hi Karen

Just calling in to say welcome. I too have OA in both hips, though oddly only the left is really painful. I haven't particulary noticed a pulling sensation in the legs but the muscle can go into spasm sometimes which isn't pleasant while it lasts. Have never had the bruising though. If you can't recall actually knocking yourself or crashing into something as I do. I would have a word with the doc. This may not be true for you so don't panic unduly, but I think some meds can cause unexplained bruising. Just a thought.
    take care

Thanks Chris, I think it is about time I spoke to my doctor again, because I know I have not knocked myself for this bruising to appear.

I must ask, are you going to have the hip replacements.

I'm not on the list as yet though I am told the OA I have been nuturing for 8 years in both is severe. I still manage to work part time at the mo which is why my Consultant thinks that it is only my muscle and general fitness holding me manky hips together. Though my mobiltiy is poor, I know I am lucky in that I don't as yet get the constant and severe pain that some others suffer on here. We all differ in how it affects us the x rays never really give the whole picture and yes ultimately when things deteriorate further, I will be forced to let the Consultant play with me bones! Those who have had THR's are a wealth of good info on here so do ask any questions though I hope you are a long way off that just yet. Maybe you just need some better anti-inflams and pain meds for now?

I hope you find the forum as helpful and supportive as I have. Will catch you again here somewhere no doubt. Take care

Thanks Chris, I am seeing a consultant next week with the intention of having the op for my hip, dont know how long the normal waiting list is nowadays. probably quiet a way away.

I nearly had the op done in a private clinic which was taking on patients in a certain criteria, the date was booked until they realized I suffered from sleep aphnea, so they had to cancel on me.

    Isn't it always the way.

I have to get fit again as My husband has severe spinal problems and needs my help.

    Hi Karen,

Good luck for the appointment next week pocket duties are available if they would help?

I get your reluctance to use a stick flower but if it helps there is no real difference to wearing glasses if you see what i mean? It might take you a bit of time to get used to it but it could make things much easier for you?

Sorry you got cancelled but maybe the lists are not as long as they were? Here when they said about mine it was 16 months but that's albut 2 years ago now and it 'might' have improved. Let us know how you get on please. Cris x

Hi Karen, you really should see your GP re the bruising and also for some more effective meds. Now that the time limits are no longer set on waiting times, the wait is more than likely going to be a lot longer for replacements. So, I would definitely get your name on the waiting list. A replaced hip is never as good as a healthy "real" hip joint, but it is miles better than a diseased one.

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi karen,
Nice to meet you but sorry its under the Arthritis circumstances,
I read you are reluctant to use a stick, i get that completely, although i urge you to give it a try, ive been using one for 4 weeks and have been much better pain wise since using it. Its my first day at work on monday with my crutch and im really worried about it. I know it helps me and im still thinking of ways i could get round not using it! Silly when it helps, if it was a hearing aid or glasses im sure i wouldnt be so anxious. Give it a go might b a great help to you.

Hi welcome sorry to hear you have joined us but they are a great group. You must go back to the doctors about pain relief. I chose the doctor in my practise that i knew would listen (have stomach problems so limited to what i could take. Now on tramdol/parc mix which helps to dull most parts of my body now (the pain when i am having a bad day). I am still quite mobile and have the odd rubbish day were i find it hard to walk but it seems to have affected most of my body quite quickly. I am sure the expert advise from the wonderful people on this site will help you as they have me.

Hi Constable, just read your post, let me assure you that if you need new hips then have them they are just wonderfull  The waiting list in my local hospital is less than 16wks,less if your hips are really bad.As for a walking stick, they are a fashion item.I had one for years before my hips went, wonderfull for walking, lots of lovely heads on them too,I love them. It's when you get to the cruthches stage I hate :!: Don't allow it to get to that  You have to push with these consultants, they are under pressure from all sides but their hearts are to relieve suffering.I consider myself so lucky,my surgeon was just the best and still looks after me,indeed I go on Monday to see him or a member of his team that I now know so well,as he likes to see how I'm getting on.You must put your case forward.Wish you luck, and welcome to this brilliant forum. Mirabella

    Hi constable,

Just reading ur post and had to reply.

I too have severe OA in my hip and been back and forth to the Dr's than I have to Tescos in these last few months, to try control my pain!

I am not on 20mg butrans patchs, lansoprazole 15mg,naproxen 500mg,paracetamol 500mg and now for night time I have 5mls of oreomorph which helps me loads at night now, as I was having terrible nights sleep as my leg and hip always seems to throb and ache and feel like chineses burn's if that makes sense at all and pulling.

Hope this helps some, but I would def go back to the Dr's if the ibuprofen does't kick in after a week and don't wait for the month.

I was due to see the consultant on monday last but unfortunatley I went down with the flu the day before. They have already given me a new appointment for next month, just as well because I've had this flu for over 1 week now and still feel really ill.

Am feeling really fed up with myself at the moment.
