Hi all
I am 45 and used to be active playing sports until the OA in my hips has taken over and I have found it more difficult to continue. Does anybody have any suggestions what hobbys I should take up rather than just watching TV!!

Seen as you were quite sporty could you (or would it be too painful) buy a push bike and go for a simple bike ride, eg round a park or a lake.
It would get you out of the house.
Or go on to the bbc website and learn a language.
Or what about (don't laugh) a train set, you could make models for it.
Oh well there is a couple of suggestions
Good luck

Hi Graham,
Good suggestions from Julie there and what about swimming would you be able to get to your local pool and enjoy some non-weight bearing exercise even if you're not able to swim?Love, Legs x

Hi Graham
What about an exercise bike? I know it can be boring but I got one on Freecycle a couple of years ago after my first Total Knee Replacement and now just do 10 minutes on the bike every day. Boredom sets in after that for me. You can of course watch TV or listen to music whilst "cycling". Multi-tasking aye?!!

Some good suggestions,Train sets (not the thomas the tank variety) can be spectacular - if you have got the space! but swimming is good all round use of muscles but not weight bearing.

Hi Bleatarn,
Riding for the Disabled is great fun. You'll need to get your GP to fill in a form, basically saying it won't harm your condition. I rode almost up to my last hip replacement and about two months after. It's good exercise, fresh air, nice people helping and lovely horses. They'll try to get a horse and saddle to suit your hips. And they have ramps, mounting blocks and sometimes a hoist to get you on board. If you google RDA their main site tells you where venues are nationwide. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

I know how you feel. I had to give up alot of sport due to my HMS/Arth in my knees.
I've found I can still do light exercises (depending on the pain). I have a Nintendo Wii and have a few sport games for it that doesnt take up too much energy or give too much pain, maybe something like that would keep you stimulated.
As I am getting help now (thankfully) I've been told I will be able to take up rowing again.
I hope you can find something to suit you soon.I ♥ Runrig.

My husband was a keen sportsman, cricket mainly,he can no longer play the actual game so he umpires,he also helps some of the newer players and gives advice, would that be something you would enjoy? i think it makes him feel like hes passing on his knowledge and he was a very good cricketer so they are gaining lots, hope you find something to interest youx0
