I am due to start physio today..
Am new to all this so am unsure what to expect..
Is it all based on exercises to get joints moving more freely??
Any info would be greatly appreciated..

I would imagine that they will undertake an assessment first and then develop a programme of excercises tailored to meet your needs. Good Luck with it it could be painful to start with.

From what I can remember from years ago they assess first by asking lots of questions, checking the range of movement in the joint/s and then workikng out the best way to get you moving again. caterina57 is right, it may well aggravate things so no pain meds before you go - they need accurate feedback on pain levels, then have some when you get home. Good luck, I hope you have an interested and helpful physio. DD

Physios don't do physio much these days, a quick assessment, show you how to do the exercises and then see you the following week before discharging you, 5mins tops.

Like all other services, physio is strictly rationed and the staff have got used to dealing with us like this. You'll spend longer waiting, watching a number of them behind the desk discussing last nights telly than you will being seen.

    8) Its a grin, honest!

Well i am back from my physio with sore ankles lol..
She read the letter my doc sent me regarding my bone scan results..
She said that with my RA affecting so many joints there was not much she could do for me..
She did some stretches on my ankles and told me what exercises i could do on my ankles and finger/wrists..
She said that she was going to refer me to hydrotherapy as she felt that would benefit me by exercising all my joints..
She said that if i get a bad flare in between i can ring and make an appointment..
    Thats about it....lol..
    Anyone had Hydrotherapy???

    Hi Tracy,

Better she was honest and didn't hurt you... sometimes they do think that something will help and its no good saying it hurts or doesn't cus they can be very insular....

Good she is sending you for hydro... now that's a good one flower.

had it for 3 months back along and it got my legs working and helped to rebuild some of the muscle loss.... was well worth having for me at any rate.

Hope the appointment comes through soon for you. Cris x

Hi, Hydrotherapy is pure JOY!! Lovely warm water which aids freedom of movement and feels just great. The physio is right, it is easier to exercise the whole body whilst having hydro. Be warned though - it is VERY easy to over do it in hydro and to really ache after. Keep your diary free on hydro day so that you can retire to bed for a nap after if necessary!!!

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Quite looking forward to Hydro now...
Will ensure the rest of my diary is free on that day so i don't overdo it..

    Hi tracey
Glad you are back and in one peice
I have been referred for hydrotherapy too followig my physio assessment - mind you how long I will have to wait to get it is another matter! I have been told that my hydrotherapy will only be 4 sessions further assessment after that will determine if I can be referred to the longer term hydrotherapy course.

    Hi Tracy,

Its good stuff hydro  Forgot about the warm water.... I had big spine surgery back along and they used to tip me into the hydro pool in the mornings and let me stay for hours.. the physio's were so pleased I wanted to get the legs back they bent over backwards and bent the rules

I was an in-patient so its a bit different.

Its still good stuff though now a days I have so many issues about how ugly and fat i got I don't think I could do it .....

Sorry you enjoy it and make good use of the weightlessness,. that helps as does the warmth. Cris x

    Hi Tracy Yahoo, lovely Hydro.

Sorry the physio seemed a bit dismissive but you are gonna love that hydro. You too Cath. You will still be supported there with someone in the pool to show you appropriate exercises and if you find it helps, do like I did and beg and plead till they give you some extra sessions. Sadly they often do have to limit sessions to about 6 week blocks at a time because of demand. Speedy is right though although the time of each visit can seem short, about 20 mins don't be tempted to overdo it. It does I hope, leave you feeling a bit more mobile but oh soooo tired.
    Good luck and enjoy.
    Chris

ps Our hossie pool has open sessions too over lunch hours for anyone to use though you are left to yourself, it is pricey and limits numbers. Just a thought if you do find it helps and want to continue it might be worth asking.
