You know what I am going to say:

greatly reduced pain, greatly enhanced mobility,
greatly reduced pain, greatly enhanced mobility,

repeat as required (unlike the pain dullers!)

I know that surgery is not guaranteed and that sometimes the outcome isn't all that was expected, but I reckon that many, many more go right than go wrong. This is the opportunity to improve your life and surely that has to be a good thing. I wish you well. DD

    Hi Jodie and welcome.

A few of us are waiting for ankle surgery. Bobby is currently in hospital having had a fusion so we are waiting to hear from him again and find out how is surgery went. I am waiting for a triple fusion but have no date yet.

Do you have OA in the ankle?
Okay good luck with your surgery but I'm sure we will hear from you again before the op,

    Hi Jodie,

What I can say is the surgery wasnt too bad at all. Only been a couple of days though. When resting there is just a dull ache, it is when I lower my limb and get a rush of blood to it is when the pain comes. But as I say, its only been a couple of days since my surgery and that is to be expected. Also, like DD says, anything that will impove your quality of life has got to be a good thing hasn't it.

    Hi Jodie

got to be worth it - if you are in enough pain and Oswestry is a really good place to have this sort of surgery done, but i expect you know it.

Hi Bobby - that was quick - very pleased you are doing so well - you are a STAR!

    Love and good luck Jodie

    Hi jodie 1
Sorry for delay in responding to your post.
Following my consultation at the orthopaedic dept. at my local hospital they have suggested that an ankle replacement is my best option.
They have said that recovery times are shorter than for fusion and will have more movement.
The operation may be at end of April. So will be thinking of you, please keep us posted and hope all goes well for you which I'm sure it will. The prospect may be daunting but the end result will make it all worthwhile.
    Regards

    Hi Jodie,
I had my ankle joint replaced in 2003 and it is great. It does still swell by the end of the day but I have good movement and no real pain. I had it done at The Nuffield Orthopedic hospital in Oxford.
Good luck hope it goes well.

    Hi tiggernut
It is great to hear from someone who has gone through an ankle replacement, especially having had it some while ago and not experienced any real problems since.
I am due to have the operation shortly. My main concern is driving.Tiggernut can I ask if you drive (automatic or manual) and if so have you had any problems?

    Hi Ron,

Yes I drive, I have an automatic now but at the time I had a manual and my surgeon said had it been an auto I could have driven straight away.
Needless to say I was gutted it was manual.Anyway I drove after 6 weeks. I also had a removeable cast which was a bonus as you could take it off whilst sat watching telly, and at night in bed. I think once the cast came off after 6 weeks I had to wear the backslab for another couple of weeks but I was alllowed to drive with that on.I had no problems driving at all.It was my left ankle I had done.
Good luck with it hope it goes well.

    Hi Anita

Thanks for your reply,my left ankle is also the 'guilty party'!

The possibility of a removeable cast (and back slab) is indeed an added bonus, the prospect of a full plaster cast for all those weeks I felt rather daunting. You have eased my mind no end (just hope my surgeon takes the same route).
I'm almost (I say almost) looking forward to having the operation done and give me more mobility and less pain (though that's less than my sciatica at the moment, but that does go away!). :x

I'm sure everyone will agree it's better chatting to others on the forum (with their support and first hand experiences) on various aspects of damned 'arthur' than reading some obscure article on the internet.

    Thanks again

    Hi Ron,

Yes I agree it's better to talk to others that know what it's like living with this crap!
Good luck and don't forget to let us know how it goes.
I do hope you can have a removable cast it saves all that scratching with a knitting needle lol!.
    All the best,
    Anita.
