Inner knee/thigh pain

Hi, not been on for a while as I've had surgery on very inflamed and arthritic joints on both thumbs. The joints have been excised and fused with a microplate. Very successfully, I can say.
Now I have a problem with my knees particularly the right one. I can walk and work in the garden without any problems but have very disturbed sleep as I cannot put one knee on top of the other. The pain is in my inner knees (if that makes sense) and can trouble up the thigh a bit. My GP thinks it's arthritis although x-rays didn't confirm this. I am active and can walk for long periods but this begins to tell on my knees. I am wakened several times a night as I naturally tend to sleep with one knee on top of the other. I've tried a pillow between but doesn't work.
Does anyone have any experience of this, please?
Would appreciate any help or even understanding.

Hi there,
from what you are describing it sounds very much like Arthritis, I would have thought that the pillow between your legs would have helped, so I really wouldnt know what to say to you with regards to that.
What I find helps on a daily basis is to make sure that my whole leg is always warm. Even if it gets cold for a few seconds it can set the arthritis off.
Sorry I carnt be of any further help.

Hi Rictina,
Many thanks for your prompt reply.
I appreciate your advice about keeping the leg warm throughout the day as I do have very cold feet (and hands).
I'm sure you have already helped - thanks again.0 -
I sleep with a pillow, lengthways from ankle to groin: it doesn't take it all away, pain dullers help too. Also use the pillow, perhaps placed horiozontally across the knees but try to sleep in the recovery position, with the painful knee being the one 'thrown' over but still supported. I know how miserable this is as both my ankles and knees are affected. I wish you well. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hello DD,
Thank you for your reply and good wishes.
It helps just to know that someone else (you and Rictina) understand just how painful this is. I will persevere with the pillow in the manner you suggest and hope for some respite. I very much sympathise with you if both your ankles and knees are affected.

Hi
Sorry I dont have much advice, apart from when I first got arthur I went with pain in my knee and it turned out to be athur of my hips....referred pain they called it.
I hope its not, but just something to think about.
Good luck with everything

Hi Barbara,
That thought did cross my mind and when my GP gave my hip movement a cursory examination he thought there was some wear and tear. Part of the ageing process, he called it!!
I will certainly keep this in mind and very much appreciate your response and good wishes.

Thanks, Val, for this.
Pain and it's source is certainly difficult to pin down.
I'll be trying the pillows again tonight and keeping warm all day and I already do gentle exercises.
Sorry to hear about your bad night and hope they are few and far between.

Hi bairn4sure
Oh you do have my sympathy. I know exactly what you mean about the knees at night. Like Barbara I have OA in the hips but after a day walking incorrectly to compensate for the hip my, I assume healthly knees are screaming. With the bed to myself I usually find I end up pulling part of the duvet between my knees, seems to stay in place longer than a pillow.
In the early days, when things weren't too bad I did find seeing a physio helped, she taught me to walk more correctly and it certainly helped to reduce the referred knee pain. Hope you find something that helps.
take care

Hi Chris,
It perhaps doesn't help either of us, but it is so good to know there is someone who understands how bad this can get.
I think I am very lucky, so far, that my walking is not affected but night after night of very disturbed sleep is extremely debilitating.
One of the consultants I've seen suggested that debridement of my knees "would do no harm".Having just had surgery on both of my thumbs, I need a better reason than "would do no harm" to endure any more. That day might come however.
Many thanks for your advice and kind wishes and for getting in touch.
I do hope you find some relief as well.
Best wishes, Jim0
