This may sound a numpty question, but Im going to ask anyway, lol.

I have arthritis & have been told that I really should have a full hip replacement in my left hip, but as I'm only 37 yr old the docs want to hold back as long as possible which I am in agreement with.

My question is, everytime I bend down to pull my ugg boots on I hear a cracking noise, has anyone experienced this or knows what it is ?

    Hi Rictana

Hey no questions are silly on here so don't ever feel that. I have the manky left hip too, and at 50 am still considered a bit too young for a THR though am heading that way. so you have my very real sympathy there. My hip does sometimes sort of click and feel as though it has locked for a while. Ouch! Is the cracking noise coming from the hip itself and is it painful? I only ask because I know one or young people whose knees crack quite loudly when they bend down, but they don't feel any pain or discomfort.
Hope you have a supportive GP and can mention it to them when you next visit.
    take care

    Hi Chris,

Hope you dont me asking but how long have you suffered with your hip ? Im just wondering how long mine may last out.

The noise comes from somewhere between my hip & knee, not quite sure eaxcatley. No I dont feel any pain when it cracks but its only when Im in that certain position.

My GP isnt too bad, so I will mention it to him next time I go in a few weeks time.

    Thanks

    Hi again

Ask away love, but do bear in mind we are all totally different as to how we experience, symptoms, pain, mobility probs and last out until possible OA may need a new joint. I think you are still waiting for a clear diagnosis of what you are dealing with and whether there is some RA in the mix?
For me I noticed early signs maybe 9 years ago when I had trouble getting out of a car, passenger side. The left hip didn't want to move that way, you may understand that one. Gradually the achy bit after my 6 days at work each week that usually cleared up overnight took longer to recover from. To be honest I just got on with it for years. It is probably only 2 years ago I mentioned it to the doc more and more until she sent me for x rays. which by then showed severe OA surprisingly in both hips though only the left felt painful. Physio and hydro helped for a while, my range of movement was very poor but luckily I did not have too much pain and was only on Ibrupofen but eventually my lovely physio persuaded me to see the Ortho Consultant early last year.

He said I needed both hips doing and unfortunately for me he would have done it there and then as he specialises in a new type of hip for younger people which included me. Do google 'silenthip' it may interest you. (or I can send a link on pm) However he could see he had shocked me and let me bolt for the door. When he heard I was still working 4 days a week in a physical job he nearly fell off his chair, he says my muscle holding me together.
I do know that things can sadly deteriorate quickly for some though. I am naxproxen and cocodomal for the bad days now, with valium thrown in for muscle spasms which are eye watering and it is only a matter of time before I reluctantly beg for a new hip just as the waiting lists are getting longer with budget cuts!!! I however do feel I have been very lucky, so I hope this gives you some hope. It all really depends on your x ray and blood results you are waiting for and how much pain you are in. Your quality of life is the main thing if you need a new hip sooner rather than later, then they shouldn't deny you. Those who have had it done are an inspiration on the forum and a great comfort to me. If your pain is under control try not to fret and wait and see what your x ray and results show and take it from there.
Sorry this is too long and I hope helpful rather than scary.
    take care

    Hiya,

i get the cracking thing too usually in my ankles first thing, but other joints depending what i'm up to... when i experienced this before being diagnosed as a friend of Arther, a physio told me that the 'cracking noises' could be coz a tendon has slipped out of its usual position and all the noise is, is that the tendon is snapping back into place or an air bubble trapped in the joint fluid popping .... so i don't worry about it anymore as it doesn't hurt but i know what you mean about it making you cringe when it happens

I must say that I do distinctly remember when the only time i heard the 'snap, crackle, pop' it was from my cereal!!

Again this my be different for you so suggest you mention it to GP next time you're there.

    Good luck

My Rheumy said exactly the same thing when I asked him some years ago, it doesn't signify or damage anything, so nothing to worry about as many of my joints crack.

I was told the same by a physio, nothing to worry about, so when my neck and anywhere else cracks, creaks, I do panic. I put the radio/music on when doing my stretching exercises to drown out the cracking

It's either the wodge of tenners you stored in your toecaps for a rainy day or it's nitrogen in your joints (that's what I was told causes the cracking/creaking noises). If it doesn't hurt when it happens it's fine. DD

    Hi Chris,

I have had a diagnosis of OA & avascular necrosis in my left hip for a few yrs now, my hip joint is bone on bone. My consultant has said that I need a full hip replacement & is willing to do it, but if I can hold off & manage with pain mangament then that would be better for someone of my age.

I'm taking tramadol, pregabalin, diclofenac & paracetamol which is keeping it bearable for me.

Thanks for all the support, info & help Chris. I hope your feeling ok yourself ? No you havent scared me, lol, & I will have a look at the web site you mentioned.

I have been suffering from cracking noise since I was 50 in my knees, going on 63 this yr. At that time I was suffering fron back pain and nobody could tell me what the crackling noise from my knees were. I have since found out that it was the beginning of osteo arthritis and most of my joints are now cracking esp my neck and jaw and although not painful is very frightening. I have been reassured by members on this forum that I am not the only one. I do not know where it is going to stop as I am getting on a bit.

    Hi there,

I've been told I need a full left hip replacement as well. And yes I get a lot of cracking and crunching from my left hip. Some times just makes you feel sick and some times yes it does hurt. Also I find that when walking my hip will click and feel like it is going to give way. Hate that feeling. I'm sure it's going to happen sooner or later.

Hope your coping ok with it all
