Drooping eyelid

Just wondered if anyone else has had a sudden drooping of the eyelid? In my case it's only one eye and only somewhat droopy (makes me look a bit demented I reckon!) but it is annoying. I have been having problems with my vision and general eye probs (particularly in the eye which is now droopy) for months now, apparently caused by dry eyes and/or and untreated eye infection and have an appt at the eye hospital in a couple of weeks. Not overly concerned - it's "just another thing" but wondered if anyone else has experience this either as part of Sjogrens syndrome or other eye probs.
Thanks,

Oh dear, tillytop, how irritating. There is a difference between being a bit demented and looking it, yes? It is oddly reassuring to me that it is your affected eye that is drooping - and I am glad to hear that you are not that concerned - the stride in which you take things is lengthening! If there is no pain or discomfort then I would say hang on until your appointment, but if that changes then get thee to the docs, pronto. I wish you well. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Thanks DD.
I too am pleased that it is the eye which is already dodgy which is drooping - otherwise I would be finding it difficult to see. And your comment about just "looking" demented was quite encouraging!
Hope you are still feeling better than you were.

Hi Tillytop, just noticed your post and thought I might be able to help with it.
I was diagnosed about 4 years ago with a drooping eyelid. It was noticed by my optician on a general eye-test. He immediately sent off a letter to the Opthalmology department at my local hospital. I'm mentioning this, as it's really quite vital to have regular eye-tests.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, there are actually lots of reasons as to why your eyelid suddenly droops. It's called ptosis, by the way!
It can happen due to age, medication, weak muscles in the eyelid etc, and other causes, but also can be attributed to a pretty severe muscle-wasting disease called myasthenia gravis, although this is relatively rare.
I was tested for this, which involves some drug ( I forget now what it's called) being fed intravenously into your hand, and then a reaction does/doesn't take place....Sorry I can't remember if they look for a reaction or lack of one! Duh!
My diagnosis was that my droopy eyelid was due to prolonged contact lens wear, and I had an operation which involved nano surgery through a tiny nick in my eyelid to tighten up the muscle behind my eye. This was all done by local anaesthesia, and was over in 40 minutes or so, and after a week of suffering a black eye, that Mike Tyson would have been proud of, the operation was totally successful.
Now, after scaring you half to death on this, all I would say is that you mention it to your consultant at the eye hospital, and see what he says, as really there are very many causes, the majority of which are not serious.
I don't have Sjogrens, so I don't know if that might have some bearing on your condition or not.
Good luck x0 -
Thanks Barbara and nanarose for your replies.
I will be sure to mention this at my eye appt, even if it's better by then. Better safe than sorry eh? And I am glad that yours got sorted out nanarose.

Hi Tilly,
I got one that can do it sometimes but on the side of my head i injured quite badly years ago so probably not much help to you there?
I just wandered if its connected to the untreated infection maybe your gp could give you something to help between now and the eye appointment?
Will get the deer to help the sheep chloramphenicol you while your not looking....... they do mine and it kinda helps..... though tis best to not see them coming at you A ((( ))) and love Cris who not only looks demented but acts it too often as well xx0 -
The last part for your statement may well have a grain of truth, but your demented would be a lovely demented! You daft 'aaporth, skez! (That was typed with HUGE affection!)
Morning tilly, I hope the eye has improved - your difficulty reminds me of Salman Rushdie (who always looked rather sinister with his half-closed eyes). I remember that his eyelids drooped because of a problem with the muscle that holds them open - is yours drooping all the time or does it 'perk up' occasionally? I hope it is alright today. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
Hi Tilly
how come i missed this??
I do hope that your eyelid has sorted itself out by now?? If not, that you have had it checked out?
Just a thought....do you look like you're winking??
Love in a worried sort of way

Morning tilly
How is your eye this morning. I hope it is ok now.
Have you made an eye appointment yet?
Thinking of you

Hi Tilly,
I hope your eye appointment is soon so you can put your mind at rest. Both my FIL and OH have this and being men they both just ignored it. Saying that both had eye injuries which they did not really get attention for so, self inflected. It’s more noticeable when OH is tired.
Let us know how you get on.
