Hi everyone

Fancy discussing the latest EU Directive that discounting young women drivers for their fewer accidents by insurance companies is gender discrimination???

Anyone got an opinion??

Love

What has been the watchword for women over the past thirty years or so? Equality. This is it. It's unfair but it is equal. DD

    Hi Toni,

It will apply to life insurance too. I think women had the better deal in the past.

oh toni this is a dilema.

I have written this out so many times each time a different answer.
So.... I think young women should have cheaper insurance cause I believe they are less likely to take any unnecessary chances.

I know there are some sensible young men drivers, my future son in law is one but unfortunately it is other males that have caused their premiums to be higher. (this is not fair on him)
Why should the young women also pay this price.

    There.....said it at last......hope i don't offend anyone.

On this occasion equality has llittle to do with fairness. I was listening this morning to a debate about this on the radio: the ratio of prosecutions for dangerous driving is 1:25, ie for every young woman there are twenty five young males. Young women see their cars as places of safety, young men as a way to show off to their mates. There are fewer things more dangerous on the road than a 17 year old in a souped-up-but- knackered Citroen Saxo. rehab? Spot on. DD

Well legally under the PC rules we men have been forced to adhere to all these years it's outright discrimination against men, thing is no one but the insurance compaines will make out of this you can bet ya bottom dollar on that.
One big downside though is if this goes through then the roads will have more boy racers in their scabby little pathetic Nova's cauing problems for all of us, maybe they should fit a 4 inch steel spike in the middle of the steering wheel instead of an airbag on all cars, that would stop a lot of the madness I'm sure off it!.
Or better still do as the Japs do and young drivers can only have one type of car for so many years that might be better.

I Can't help wondering why all the premiums are now predicted to be at the existing high price young men pay, and not halfway inbetween the two?

equality surely means that all drivers now share the risks of bad drivers equally, and also the benefits of drivers who rarely claim, so surely the equality point is halfway between the two current prices :?:

or perhaps that's too logical

I must admit i did think the fact that young lads pay so much for insurance but most of the accidents in our area are young lads. Just cannot understand one programme said that womens insurance would go up by 25% and mens would go down by 10%??????? Did not quite understand that.
No easy solution but all i know is that my eldest put off learning to drive because of the cost of insurance. My youngest lad is learning and some quotes we have got are £3000 odd a year....My daughter on the other hand was about £900 at that age... Needless to say even when our youngest passes his driving he will remain on his bike for a few years until the insurance comes into his range that he can afford. So frustrating...we live rural and everyone has to travel to find work. He has come off his bike twice this winter with the bad weather and road conditions...Thankfully not hurt and kind people took his bike in and kept it safe for him.
The insurance companies are not going to take any loss on this so JOE PUBLIC WILL HAVE TO PAY>>>>AGAIN.

I understand the 'equality' label but insurance is about risk

Look at it from another angle....my health/travel/life insurance costs more because of my illness/ disability and because this puts me at a bigger risk of making a claim, but surely you can't discriminate against a disabled person (i'm not going to argue about how successful this particular piece of legislation is but you're not allowed to discriminate) so should everybody else pay for my illness and propensity to claim because of it....I believe not but to say otherwise could be considered discrimination

Older people taking on life policies get charged higher premiums than younger people (higher risk of claim) is this discrimination or common sense

I don't think its about equality - its about risk, its a fine line

I didn't learn to drive until I was 25 so I missed out on the worst of the insurance nightmare and I feel for kids but to be honest I also feel a lot of them should think about delaying driving.....If you live in a city you can with a little effort get out and about without one and save up till you can afford to be in charge of one of the easiest ways to kill somebody!

I knew a lot of those idiots blokes that pushed up premiums - when I was a teenager and showing off to your mates got me in a car that ended up on its roof and in an incident when a friend was killed, several boys in my sixth form were involved in accidents, 4 writing off cars, whilst we were doing our a-levels , my brother is now 27 and has so far written off 3 cars!!! (he still insists he's a better driver than me  ). Of my female friends in the same period 1 backed a car into a wall denting the bumper and scratching the paint. I know thats only a snapshot of experience but it gives an inkling of why young men are considered a higher risk!!!

Insurance companies are the biggest thieves around, everything is aimed at getting our money from us without actually paying out, any excuse and they will get out of paying...
    It's a scam folks....
My OH has heart failure and when we wanted a quote for travel insurance is was some ridicuous amount over the odds, but, and this is the real kicker, even if we paid the extra, she still wouldn't have been covered for anything to do with her condition  That should be illegal
I hate insurance companies with a passion, don't get me ranting, I am likely to be told off again :x :lol:

    I'm with Rehab on this.

Wimmen want equality, then wimmen get equality, then wimmen don't want equality.

I'm with the ladies on this on, equality or not, they are the more patient and safer drivers on the roads, you always get the exception to the man/boy/women/girls in their driving, but, the stats don't lie...do they!?

I have been driving for over 35 years, I've had my share of claims, some my fault, some others in various ways (stolen/broken into etc.) but, one thing is clear:- the proportion of driving (miles covered) I've done to my wifes driving is a significant factor who is safest in our scenario, therefore she should pay less.

Overall, I think women are the more tolerant drivers...Long live women drivers...keep their premiums down

Still waiting to see if anyone can answer my question... What's the ratio of male to female drivers in this country... If there are more males then surely that will contribute to the figures....!?

They also seem to be picking up some of their male counterparts’ bad habits.

I have worked with statistics for many years, stats can prove whatever you want them to prove. I can get a result of 35% positive or 93% positive from exactly the same set of figures. Cherry pick what you need, juggle the formulas to suit and produce a complicated multi-page report with pages of confusing numbers, but which leaves out what you don't want them to know.

People usually read the first 2 paragraphs and the Conclusion. Objective achieved!

Hence, lies, damn lies and statistics.

I know this sounds a bit to logical....but can't they have a price for 18 year olds regardless of sex and give them a kick back for every 3months no claim is made to reduce the premuim (rather than the yearly one...i know which never happens...) So the careful young driver would receive lower insurance whether they are male of female.
