One of my Knee Replacements Needs Replacing :-(

Hello Everyone,
In January I went to see my surgeon for my yearly review of both my TKRs and sadly I have to have one replaced. It's quite puffy and I have been suffering pain for a while now and can only weight bear on it for 30 minutes maximum. My surgeon refused to do it and I've been referred to the 'knee expert' in the area who I saw on Monday this week.
I've been put on the emergency orthopaedic list because the prosthesis is so loose it's wearing away healthy bone and the more of that which wears away the more complex the revision will be. I've already signed the consent form and had bloods done and am waiting for the pre-op assessment date and have been told the surgery will be carried out in the next 2 – 3 months. I'm feeling quite shell-shocked as things are moving very fast.
What I'd like to ask is that has anyone had revision surgery and what can I expect from my new prosthesis? Also because of arthur being in my neck I have to be awake and am quite afraid of facing this prospect (as I'm sure everyone else does) so if anyone can offer reassurance on this front I'd be very grateful.
Today hubby has got the wheelchair out of the shed and dusted off the cobwebs which means that we can, at least, go out together without the pain dominating every trip …………I'm even looking forward to going to Sainsburys again.

Linda,
Sorry to hear that 1 of your knees has given up the ghost. never a good thing to happen, How long have you had the replacement ? I thought they were good for around 1 years.
At least it seems they are pushing it through quickly.
Hope it all goes well for you.

Hi Linda
Sorry hear your TKR is needing replacing. I have no experience of knees, so can`t advise. sorry. But I hope that it happens soon for you and that all goes smoothly.

Hi Rob and NB,
Thanks for your replies.
I had them both done together in the same operation in 2000. One is knee is perfect still but one is kaput ....they don't know why :roll:Love, Legs x

Hi linda
I can imagine your shock when you were told you need your knee replacing again. That isn't what you wanted to hear.
I can't advise you on replacement surgery but I can say that when I had my stump operated on in august I was awake. I know my surgery wasn't as technical as your knee, it is just to tell you that the surgeon and the nurses in the theatre were very nice. The surgeon spoke to me evety so often to explain what he was doing and a nurse held my hand, talking to me throughout the procedure. I didn't feel a thing.(actually it was quite fascinating watching everyone)
I hope your operation comes quickly so that you can get rid of the pain.
Glad you have a chair so that you can get out and about.
Good luck
Take care

Hi Linda
I am sorry to hear this, but I am glad they have put you on the emergency list, I do hope you get it done very soon.
Thank goodness your other one is ok, I do know someone that has had there hip replaced using a spinal block, and they said it was fine, and the recovery quicker then those that had a general one
Good Luck with it, we will all be here for you.
Love

I have not had a knee replaced but just want to give you my best wishes. When I had my THR I chose to be awake due to issues with my breathing. I was scared but I didn't feel a thing. If you are lucky you will have a lovely anaethesist like me. I will always choose to be awake for future operations.
Seriously Linda, it must be so painful and at least they are moving on.I know everything is happening fast but it will be for the best I am sure.

Sorry to hear you are having to have your knee replacement replaced. I havent had any experience with knees btu I have had an operation while awake.
I had to have my appendix out when I was 12 weeks pregnant with my second child. I had a spinal block and although I found the sensation very weird, the nurses and doctors couldnt have been more supportive during the operation.
I hope things go well for you.Jaki0 -
Hi Julie, Barbara, Elizabeth and Jaki,
This is just what the doctor ordered ....positive feedback about the anaesthetic - it's the bit I dread more than anything, but I bet you all felt as afraid beforehand.
It can't be as bad as I imagine when you say Elizabeth that you'd be awake from now on.Love, Legs x

HI Linda
so sorry to hear that you've got to have this done, but at least they know what to do, and will do it soon, which has to be a blessing if it gets rid of the pain etc.
You've had better replies than I can give you about the op- since I've not had a joint replaced, but I did have a small op done under local in theatre, and I was amazed that even though the op was on my underam, I wasn't troubled by what was going on, and it was quite interesting seeing what went on !
good luck & I'll be thinking of you in your charriot just wave to bubbbles as you pass her in hers in the supermarket won't you
hugs

Hi Legs,
I am sorry you have to have that done and fingers crossed they will get you in and re-done before too long.
My brother has had one of his his thr's re-done and though it took a bit longer to recover and has a bit less movement he reasons they are still good to have had. Less pain as well.
The anesthetics are always a bit worrying to everyone I think. I react badly sop now have some nicer stuff, can't remember its name but its white and injected into you and begins with an M. Much better to come round from and much better re the after effects so maybe you could sound them out on having that one?
Leaving you a ((((( )))))) and a hope it will make things much easier for you again. Cris xx0 -
Hi Linda so sorry you are having to have your knee redone , i had mine done while awake , and didn't feel a thing think they might have given me a relaxant as well as the epidural , i was very surprised and fount it better than the being totally out of it with anesthetic , i wish you well and a good recovery xI know i am a lady ,all life is a journey xx MAY xx0

Hi Cris,
Interesting about your brother - I had heard that the revisions aren't as good as original prosthesis, so your post confirms it.
I shall ask for the nice white stuff beginning with M shall I - it wasn't Milk of Magnesia by any chance was it????
Think I'll need lots of (((( )))) for courage nearer the time.Love, Legs x

Blimey legs, where did all that suddenly spring from? It must have been a huge shock but at least things are moving quickly and that can only be a good thing (says she who is happily on the outside of it all!) Seriously, I am sure all will go well, the anaesthetic side of things is, of course, troubling but you have had many a positive tale in your thread about them and modern anaesthesia is a wonderful art. Focus on the benefit of it all - yes there may be one or two 'hoops' to 'jump' through first (there should be a better analogy but it's waaaaaaay to early for me to create one!) but the outcome surely will be worth it. I wish you well, let us know when it's all due to happen and we will be there, in number, to support you. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

You don't want to watch no way and they don't encourage it. I took my I-pod in with me so I could dream about good times dancing with my friends.Linda you could take a recorded book.

I actually asked to stay awake when I had a tendon and bone repaired on one of my fingers, so I could watch it, t'was quite surreal but very interesting... Lol
The surgeon was very excited that I was paying an interest and talked me through every step..
I am a bit weird like that though but it does show how good the numbing can beMe-Tony

Hi Legs,
You got M of M? Got any to spare
He does say also that what ever stiffness he has, however much its not quite as good as the first one its still better than the one that broke down and he is having his other one re-done as well.
hey he is quite active still so its not too bad and his had to be done cus they had done over 20 years.
Will get the name of the anesthetic cus off to the vets in a min and they use the dame one...... ((((( ))))) and hope they will get you all sorted soon. Cris xx0 -
