Sometimes things just go right

We spent the weekend with some old uni friends. Two other couples. We hadn’t all been together for over 40 years. The three men used to share a house. I’d been told there’d be a downstairs bed and loo but, as we all know, other people’s ideas of what we can cope with don’t always translate into something possible. However, we just couldn’t resist. Here’s the good luck story.

1. We still very much liked each other, were on the same wavelength, had a great time, will do it again.
2. Our hostess was a trained cook. C & D brought the beer. We brought the wine. It worked.
3. Our downstairs sofa bed was large enough for my 6’2” husband not to lie diagonally across it, sprung so’s we didn’t have to meet in the middle unless we wanted to and high enough for me to get out of unaided. It even had an armrest wide enough to leave my dressing stick and sock ‘putter-onner’ on. Because it was such a good sofa bed it didn’t matter that I’d forgotten my memory foam pillow as my neck was well supported so I didn’t get the migrainey headache I wake with when it’s not been supported properly.
4. The downstairs loo had a lock I could work (Huge bonus. Deep joy!), a washbasin big enough for me to wash in (OK – I’ve had a bath since) and a hot tap I could turn on and off so I only needed help with the cold one when I wanted to brush my teeth.
5. Best of all - I’d completely forgotten that, for some totally inexplicable reason, D never used to call me by my Christian name. It was always ‘Sexy’. Imagine being greeted with an enthusiastic ‘Hello Sexy’ when you’re a 64 year old arthritic with limbs pointing every which way! It set the scene for a great weekend.

The moral of the story? Sometimes things have the potential to be either wonderful or disastrous, especially for those of us with ‘special needs’. My advice is grasp the nettle and go for it or you’ll never know.

Good luck to one and all,

Sexy

What an utterly fabulous week-end. I can understand your misgivings about the furniture and facilities arrangement - those without our problems sometimes don't quite grasp our difficulties but how lovely it all worked out fine. (I clean my teeth with warm water, the cold hurts!) I hope you all do get together again soon before the end of the year - having old friends like that is an absolute boon.

As for the 'Hello sexy' - unusually for DD, words fail me. I'll start with jealous, perhaps envious too, no, jealous still works, as does envious, nah, like jealous best. DD

DD – It’s OK. I guess I’ll just have to learn to cope with the jealousy, envy etc. of those less sexy than myself. Ooooh, it’s such a responsibility!

Legs – I don’t think I’m quite up to sashaying standards yet. I’ll work on it. Remind me – how do I do it without falling over?

Valval – I’ve done the hotel rooms thing too. It’s not half as much fun although being pushed back to the hotel by a happy, over-confident drunk has its moments.

Julie – hopefully at T & E’s 40th wedding anniversary ‘do’ in early May.

Oh sexy stickywicket, I guess you will cope just fine, being the goddess you undoubtedly are. I am chortling mightily at the thought of you hurtling along in your chariot, courtesy of a cheerful inebriate!

Isn't 'sashay' a lovely word? DD

I must admit I thought it was a fact generally known that our Barbara is the kind of woman who could make a Bishop kick a hole in a stained glass window (thanks Mr Chandler for that one!) DD

I’m so glad you asked that, Barbara. Amazing result.

I never had any idea why (It always seemed most unlikely), so decided to ask my husband if he did.

“No” was the reply, then “I think he always fancied you but because we were going out together he never did anything about it.”

What? Run that past me again. You mean to say I could have had my pick of two decent, fit, good-looking young men? I, whose romantic life had invariably consisted of my unrequited love for blokes who barely registered my existence while fending off the odd creep who had designs on my (at that stage) relatively unscathed body? Flippin’ ‘eck! I could have been a sex siren. I just never knew it.

I’m quite confident that this piece of news will have no impact whatever on two marriages and joyfully rekindled friendships. (For all I know D might have proved useless at lifting me off low seats, fastening buttons and zips, washing my hair etc etc) But, hey, I do have a new spring in my step this morning. Or I would have if the orthotist could just get these shoes right.

So....you mean, now that I know I'm sexy I'm not sexy any more? DD, how could you? I'm devastated.

No, I didn't mean that you dafty! You are still blisfully unaware of your siren status - that is proven by your disbelief that it ever existed. colly? Norty girl! Plan B indeed (says DD who is now trying to work out if she has a plan B somewhere).

Nothing wrong with a good hijacking, Collywobble, but D's a nice guy. I think he's better off being C's 'Plan A' than my 'Plan B'. However, it'll help keep my dear husband on his toes. (Unless, of course, he decides he's in with a chance of off-loading me.)

Jackie1955 - it's what I always suspected - I'm sexy on the inside: it's just the outside that's a bit off-putting. (No, I know you didn't mean that any more than DD did. I'm just having fun here. The weekend's enjoyment still lives on.)
