Last year I had an infection in my new elbow joint and was on antibiotics for about 6 months. While on them I also had a plantar ulcer on my foot and an ulcer on my other elbow (also a replacement) which were oozing. Now I came off antibiotics in Nov and by Dec my foot and other elbow seemed to dry up and has been fine ever since. The thing is I was on a course of antibiotics a couple of weeks back for a tooth abcess and suddenly my left elbow has started oozing again and my foot which my rhumatologist said was just a flare up turned out to be an ulcer bewteen my toe has erupted and is now ozzing.(the good news is it's no where near as painful now all the mucas is out!!)
My theory is could the antibiotics have killed off the good bacteria that was protecting these weak spots?? has anyone experienced this sort of thing?

Some beneficial bacteria can be removed by antibiotics but can be easily replaced with probiotic yoghurt drinks.

Your GP or pharmacist will know if the antibiotics you were on have any side effects so suggest you ask their advice.

I do know for a fact that my sister who has had cellulitis and had to have IV antibiotics, they had a huge impact on her immune system. Bascially they have taken all the good guys out and left her in awful pain, think the local hospital she went to they pumped her full of this stuff and didnt estimate the damage. She has kidney damage too as her body couldnt cope with all the extra fluid going into her body...She's in a hell if a state...

    So yes they can...........

Thanks very much for the replies. I will have a word with the pharmacist on Monday. It might just be coincidence. I have been taking probiotics since last May when I first had the antibiotics for the infection.
Sorry to hear about your sisiter Elaine sounds awful. I was on IV antibiotics for 4 months fortunately I had no side affects, unlike these capsules!!

    Hi Tiggernut

Yeah you ask the pharmacist about it and see what they say...

My sister has just been very unlucky plus she went to a village hopsital in nairn where she was apparently screaming with pain and they were ignoring her...She is a medical sister too so knows when she isnt right and what meds she should have been on.....
