Snoring

As I've posted before, Stu my OH of 40 years is going to have a femur revision and a new hip but it could all be compromised by the following.
I'll quote from the surgeon's letter just received.
"This pleasant gentleman was seen today with regard to his snoring, which has been a problem for sometime but more particularly over the last 6 months. He says it is a throaty snore and he has been told that he may stop breathing occasionally. etc..........ad libitum
On examination today, as you say he is not overweight. His nose shows a DNS to the left. Oropharynx is generally healthy. Fibreoptic laryngoscopy however shows what is a large apparently cystic swelling in the right piriform fossa which is just beginning to deform the larynx, although the vocal cords are visible and fully functional today............etc I will arrange an urgent sleep study to look at this because he is due for an anaesthetic shortly but I would be grateful if you could formally refer him to Mr V. I have taken a photograph of the lesion and this will be available in his notes for "N" to look at.
We really do have to be upbeat about this and I have teased him unmercifully about the fact that "Mr V" is my ENT Consultant too (joke for DD there about "sharing") but he, Stu, hasn't had a DEXA scan performed by Mr V's wife which I have
Oh well we'll carry on as usual but there "ain't gonna be no suing involved" whatever the outcome.

Are we talking sleep apnoea, cherrybim? Are they saying they won't do the femur op until the snoring thing is sorted? Apparently I do a passable immitation of a wildebeest at a water hole myself - how the hell it does not wake me up I do not know. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Hi, apparentlly I snore too. I've always had sinus problems, nothing much, just a runny nose! I expect they want to be sure that his breathing isn't impeaded by anything or do something, if it is. ENT say I've got pylips (sp) in my nose, but not enough to bother with, much to my husbands annoyance!!! Love Sue xxx0

Hi Cherry,
late as ever, sorry.
I really do hope they will get the sleep thing started and it wont affect Stu's op? Not sure what a sleep study is but is it one of those belt things they put on with the mask as well?A mate if mine has sleep whats it and he has a mask and if he does stop it makes him breathe again thin... don;t quite understand it but always marvel that he can and does sleep with it in.
hey you want snoring... nothing ever could have beaten my mother's except possibly a Labrador....
Fingers crossed it all goes well for you both. Cris x0 -
We have an old cat that sleeps on the bottom of the bed and shes a terrible snorer, so high pitched and if my husband is snoring in a lower tone, it sounds like some sort of wierd music.
I'm sure its not the noise the hospital want to check, but the cause. I've been and they did a few tests, allergy, etc. said it was sinus and the only thing they could do was a major op, which they said I didn't need. (Too damn right, I didn't!)
They may find a simple cure, fingers crossed. Love Sue0 -
Hello all you lovely people, DD, Toni, NMB, Sue and Katie,
I very much appreciate all your replies.
Stu goes off for his Sleep Study bit this afternoon and to spend the night there in the *******. I do admit to being worried. It has been said that the cyst on his larynz isn't "suspicious".
He had the pre-op assessment for his hip to be sorted on the 15th March and although he passed the criteria for that the anaesthetist will have to make the final decision as to whether or not his meccano disassemblance and hip replacement can go ahead in view of his impaired airway.
He has an impressive BMI of 20.2 so our lovely surgeon is pleased about that but the ****** cortisone he took for 20 years for asthma has wrecked his bones and every other possible thing one could think of.
I'm in tears, just don't know what will happen. If he doesn't have the hip op then what? If he does with his osteoporosis impacting on everything, then what?
Thank you for listening.

Hi Cherry, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea years ago and was dure to have my hip replacement done at a private hospital which take on healthy people. But they refused to do it because of the sleep a, I am now having it done at a general hopsital where they have everything to hand should there be any problems. Although I do really feel sorry for the other patients when I do go in because I do snore very loudly, maybe they can put me in a single room and shut the door, that might help. lol

Oh cherrybim, I am so sorry. Of course you are feeling very apprehensive, if not worried, about the possible outcome of all of this. I do think that bridges are more easily crossed when one can see them, so let's wait and see what the outcome of the sleep study is, then take it one small step at a time. I do hope that they can find a way to overcome this hurdle so that the op can go ahead. Your surgeon knows what he is doing, so my fingers are crossed. Take care, be kind to yourself - do you have any family with you, or a friend? DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Thank you Cris, Karen and DD,
Feeling a little more settled now 'cos the local hos have just sent one of those automated telephone messages asking for confirmation that Stu will attend the ENT dept on the 24/03. Hopefully the actual letter will arrive tomorrow or Monday. That was pdq if anything ever was, lol.
I know the darling ENT surgeon from past experience with my silly BPPV and also a biopsy on my thyroid so I've every confidence that he'll sort Stu out, hopefully in time for him to have the hip op as listed. It will be such a relief if he can have his hip and femur sorted as he's waited so long, purely because the Orthopaedic surgeon wanted him to grow more bone mass.
None of our 3 boys is about. They're either away on holiday, going to an old school reunion or working miles and miles away. I've got two daft cats to keep me company though but sadly Cris no longer our beloved Lab who could match Stu snore for snore. I always said that they were like a couple of bull elephants in must
Thank you again.

hi cherry
it sounds like a worrying time for you - i found it really difficult when my hubby had to have an operation a year ago no matter how many times people said don't worry - i still did - but thats our job isn't it to worry about our families.
everything will work out just right - you've got all of us sending out good positive vibes and you are never without our support x
have a relaxing evening with your "2 daft cats"

when I had my TWR last November they put in my notes that I had sleep apnea, I had to have oxygen tubes up my nose to keep my sats up , they did the op the next day, so luckly it didnt cause any further problems, but monday I'm seeing a surgeon about my toe joints so wonder if this surgeon will be ok with the op ( different hospital different Surgeon) hoe all goes well with his next appointment keep us all updated, michelle0

I hope things go ok for Stu. Sorry I am late joining the thread.
I thought I would give you a couple of laughs about snoring tho:
When I was in labour with my first child I was given a shot of pethadine and it made me sleep between contractions. At one point during the contractions I woke up because my snoring was so loud. Weird thing was tho I didnt wake every time I had a contraction.
And if you want a battle of the snorers you should really come round to mine after hubby has had a beer or 10. He lays on his back and snores for the world. I am sure that the people in the flat above us wonder what on earth is going on. Add to that our Staffy. He wont sleep anywhere apart from next to me but on the floor. I end up laying on the bed in pain knowing that I cant take any more pain relief with the pair of them snoring so loud I am sure it would start an avalanche!!!
It got so bad one night that I recorded the pair of them and hubby just turned round to me and said that it couldnt have been him as he doesnt snore!!!!!!
What more can I doJaki0 -
Hi I felt I had to add my snoring problem otherwise known as my OH! lol! every night without fail it sounds like 2 hippo's mating!! And he does this thing where he breathes in with a high pitched noise and then stops breathing! it scares the hell out of me! I sit in bed saying to myself 'breath, breath, breath!' then this squealing flies out his mouth! I try and give him a nudge in his back to stop him or wake him up and I can tell him to stop snoring to no availe! I even brought these breathe right strips you are supose to wear and it stops the snoring. He wore them once and said they where stopping him breathing! So now I put up with the snoring. sometimes my pain relief helps me sleep through the night other times when pain is bad I get woken up by Mr noisy and just lye there listening to the native hippo mating call!! :x So in the morning one person gets up after having a good nights sleep and I can tell you it isn't me!!0
