WE RECENTLY VISITED RELATIVES WHO WE HADNT SEEN FOR A WHILE, WELL WE GOT TALKING I WILL STRT THE STORY LIKE THIS
MY GRANDMOTHER HAD A SISTER AND 2 BROTHERS THERE IS ONLY 1 BROTHER SURVIVING HE JUST CELEBRATED HIS 90TH BIRTHDAY
HE HAS 2 DAUGHTERS ONE HAS MS AND ONE HAS RA THE ONE WITH RA SAID SHE WAS SEEING A GENE THERAPIST AND HE HAD SAID THAT MS AND RA GO DOWN THE SAME LINES THEN BRANCH OFF SO YOU EITHER GET MS OR RA, AS I SAID ONE SISTER HAS MS 1 AS RA
THEN MY AUNTYS SON(GRANDMOTHERS DAUGHTERS SON) HAS MS THEN THERE IS ME AND MY DAUGHTER HAS RA, JUST THOUGHT THIS WAS QUITE STRANGE WONDERED WHAT YOU ALL THOUGHT
SO ITS 2 FROM 1ST GENERATION ONE RA ONE MS
ONE FROM 2ND GENERATION MS
AND ONE FROM 3RD GEN RA (MY DAUGHTER)
THIS PROBABLY MAKES NO SENCE BUT THOUGHT IT WAS A COINCIDENCE

Is MS an auto-immune disorder? Rubbish health does get passed from one generation to another, sometimes it skips a generation then comes back with a bang further on. When you're the one it hits with a bang it's no fun. DD

I don't know too much about it DD, I know that my Uncle has had to have one hip replaced and is due to have the second one done next month, all due to a large amount of steroids they pumped him with in the early days of him getting the disease...

Will have to have a check on that one though.. Mind you, your better at it than me, I will probably type it in wrong and look up S&M and get God knows what sites brougt up

I am the first in my family to get Ra although now in the last 2-3 years an. auntie and her daughter has Ra. (dads side)

But my aunties brother (and dads) had Ms. Grandparents didn't have either)

Mmmmm why should it affect me? my dad has Oa.

Very confusing or just bad luck for me.

I've always thought there's a link. My nan (fathers side), so I should say paternal there really! She had MS, I've got RA, I have a certain gene that predisposes me, my father had a club foot and then developed OA.

No one else has it in my family. I am convinced there is a link, they are both auto-immune but my Consultant wasa bit noncommittal about it when I asked him.

    Hi Karen,

I come from a family with a few genetic things and had trouble carrying to full term so ended up going to see a gentitis. She explained it to me in a way that might help with this one.

If you have a bag o=f coloured marbles and you throw them on the floor the chances of it forming the same pattern more than once is quite remote.

Then equated one colour to a 'bad ' gene and if that colour landed next to a certain colour then that would produce the genetic disorder....

Its only if they attach to the right type of gene the disorder will go active. Trouble is and why it can skip they are there and every time the genes are multiplying they can line up to produce the active disorder.

It so much in the lap of the gods and unlucky it they do line up it really is but the fact is its possible.

I don;t know id they have ever tested fully the genetic pass on for ra? I know at least some of the autoimmune things make higher chances of having it but i also know in crohn's and ms its only a 20% risk.....at least it used to be. So they had a 80% chance of not being active.

Hope that's of some help? hey nice to see you and hope your ok? Cris x

    Interesting post kmr.

I don't know about the MS but my understanding is that there is certainly a strong genetic link in RA. When I have been at the hospital when researchers have been asking questions, one of the first things asked seems to be "does anyone else in your family have RA?" My understanding (limited though it is) is that MS is another auto-immune disorder where instead of attacking the joints as in auto-immune arthritis, it attacks the nerves instead so it does sound a similar sort of process. Will be very interested to read the other replies to your thread...

Hi, I used to work with people who had severe MS 1 or 2 had diabetes as well, but not to an unusual extent as far as I remember. MS does tend very occasionally to run in families but I'm not sure its very often, as for RA, I don't know but it is thought to be another immune system disorder, so its may be the case. I've never seen it that I know, but then its not something I would know I suppose. Sorry a few rambling thoughts! Love Sue

The RA in my family comes down the female line.. my great grandma had it, my grandam had it, my mum has it and so does her sister, now i've got it too.... rheumy did say my type of RA can be genetic... but who knows.. we have all be diagnosed with it before the age of 40 but i was the youngest at 36 when i was diagnosed....

you know what they say 'fact is often stranger than fiction!'

Was really shocked to read this thread. My Dad had MS (he died 10 years ago). It is an absolutely awful disease and when i think of what he went through i feel lucky with RA! Also my cousin (on my fathers side of family) has RA.
I'm currently desperate to come off all my meds to start a family but sometimes i wonder if i'm selfish for wanting a baby just to put them through what i went through as a 'young carer'. i hadn't even thought that they could be at risk of either RA or MS.
I don't know what to think now.

    Hi

My my name is Mary and I have not posted on this site for a long time but I do pop on and read all the posts.
I found this topic very interesting as I also think there is a link between RA/MS etc.
My Dad has AS, he has had this since he was 40.
My older brother took unwell when he was in his 20s and after years of not knowing what ilness he had, mostly due to his symtoms changing, he has been diagnosed with Lupus. I have RA was diagnosed 2008 but did not know at that time that my brother had Lupus.
My younger sister started to have aches and pains 2009 and we thought she maybe had RA as her symtoms were similar to mine and we still did not know that my brother had Lupus. It turns out she has MS.
I have another brother and sister who so far are okay but as you can imagine they are worried every time they have a ache.
The other thing I feel is strange is before I had RA I was really fit and healthy. Then once I was diagnosed with RA other things started to go wrong with me. I also have Hpyer-parathyroid-ism, which is high calciam in the blood, and Rosacea.

Hi Mary, long time no see and really nice to see you  Cris x

    Hi Kicky,

Flower the genes really do have to fall in a certain way to get the genetic version of anything...... Don't let this worry you cus there are far more people who don;t get anything then do. Leaving you a ((( ))) and please remember it isn't set in stone and % of pass on in the right order isn't that high. Cris x

Just to put the cat among the pigeons, there isn't any RA in either side of my family or MS, so I'm definately unlucky, but there you go I suppose someone has to have it first, why not me? After 5 years I've come to terms with it, that's not to say I'm happy about it but you just learn how to live with it, stressing about it won't help.
