Car radio gloom.

You may remember that recently we had to fit a new battery to my Micra - nett result no radio. Apparently there has been a spike in the software and the total bill for re-coding (which may not work) will be upwards of £80 - £100. Gulp. (One company has to remove the top of the dashboard to access a bolt so the darn thing can be removed, that is £40 plus VAT and another one will try the recoding - estimates between £40 - £60, plus VAT) I am now considering the option of buying a new radio (cheap) which will hopefully be installed at a relatively low cost - but I could still end up paying in the region of £80 - £100. Is that the better option? I think it has to be. Any thoughts? I have had a number of rather long, and very quiet journeys recently - I could wear my MP3 but I think that is not a very good idea, one way or another.
What happens to car radios once DAB is fully introduced? I presume I will still have to shell out for one for the car, tho I assume the CD bit would still work even if the radio doesn't. Grrrr. This whole malarkey is makeing DD rather peevish.

DAB is going to be bloody useless for car radio's, there's talk of satalite radio being the next big thing but who knows, Halfords will fit a new sterio for you for £40 I think, have you Googled your problem to see what comes up, it seems odd they are on about taking the bloody thing out to re-code it, has it burnt out the input diode do you know?, this litlle gizmo is there incase the polarity is reversed, a spike will take them out though.0

I think they have to take it out, mell, just to get at it. Screws were unscrewed but it would not budge - apparently it is bolted in at its back, and the top of the dashboard has to be removed to access the bolt. I have googled the problem - it is a common one - but as ever with tinterweb I wonder how much of the 'advice' is genuine and how much is 'I can get someone to do this and waste an hour of their life.' I have tried two 'proven' methods and neither have worked. Time for Halfords, I think. Oh no, I got that wrong - it's time to save, then go to Halfords. Thanks for the input, everyone, it's much appreciated. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0
