Diabetes and arthritis?

Hello!
I'm just interested to know if anyone out there has arthritis and diabetes? I've got type 1 (insulin dependent) and am on a pump which is amazing!
As diabetes and arthritis are usually auto immune, I just wondered if there was anyone else out there who had both as well?
I have a fantastic consultant and brilliant diabetic nurse specialist so am very lucky

Hi Lizzie
I am lucky - I don't have diabetes ("just" the RA and a few other bits and pieces) but there may well be others on the forum who do have. From the little I know about diabetes, I think it must be hard for you coping with both but it sounds as if you have good care from the hospital though which hopefully makes managing both conditions a bit easier.

Hi, If you've got a problem with your immune system attacking itself, which is what diabetes seems to be, then arthritis, well, RA, which is also thought to be caused by the same immune system reation. Well, I read that somewhere! I'm not medical but, it seems to make an odd sort of sense to me. It does seem very unfair though! Love Sue0

I was waiting for diabetes (I was told it was a given after years on inhaled steroids) and PA turned up instead. I guess the other will rock up in due course - but I have to say I can wait. What a double whammy you have there, skinnylizzie: life is grossly unfair at times. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi lizzie
I have only the RA at the moment......Didn't know about diabetes coming along as well
Had RA 23 years so I will try and beat off diabetes a bit longer.
Sorry you have both, but it is good that the proffesional peeps are looking after you.
Take care

Yep from what I've heard, it's quite rare to have both, so that's why I'm interested to know if anyone else has this too.
DD, I hope the other stuff stays away- arthritis is enough isn't it!
I think I'm just unlucky, but at least the diabetes is controllable!0 -

My OH and I share the burden. She's a type 1 diabetic (has been for over 30 years) and I have the RA and OA. :!:''Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy''. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)0 -
I have inflammatory arthritis and am diabetic, type 2 but have had problems with sugar levels since I was 19. It isn't much fun, having both especially on steroids.0

Suzygirl, I'm sorry to hear that. Steroids can really really stuff us diabetics around. I've also had problems controlling my diabetes due to the underlying autoimmune stuff and am now on an insulin pump which at the moment seems to be stabilising things, thank goodness, but it must be hard for you if you're type 2. Have they offered you top up injections?
Take care0 -
I am on oral steroids, so by the evening my bg is really high. Also when get a flare or an infection it seems to send my sugars sky high. I can imagine for you it was difficult to control. I have heard people say that the pump is really great. Hope it is making life easier for you.
Have really made the effort lately to get things under control and have managed to lose a little weight, which I have gained due to the wonders of pred!!0 -
Hi skinnylizzie,
unfortunatly I have Psioratic Arthritis and Type2 Diabetes, insulin and tablets. They both have their moments and can be very tricky deciding which one is the culprit....
Weight yoyos up and down dependant on meds and time of year.
Also have Psoriasis to add to the mix so can get really depressing if all three have a session at the same time.....
Hope pump continues to work well for you...0 -
Skinny Lizzie,
My mother in law has RA and type 2 diabetes which is controlled by insulin injections. she got the diabetes first then the Ra several years later
