Ye gods it’s not good in Japan right now is it!, talk about getting it from 3 different angles makes you wonder if living by and building things like Atomic power stations right next to the ocean and on a major fault line isn’t a seriously stupid idea after all Tusnami is a Jananese word, someone should have thought outside the box a bit more here.
But I guess you can ‘t plan for everything but it does make you wonder, and not only did they have an obvious design fault with this type of reactor set up they had 5 all in a row so the fault ie a tidal wave took all 5 out and now 4 have all gone up in some kind of radioactive smoke so to speak. Thank god were miles away this time Chernobyl was bad enough but this doesn’t look much better right now

Hi Del not sure they are telling us much of what's being released, the Jap's suffer from bad safety in their nuke industry and are to regimented when it comes to thnigs like this, you can't take the time to read up on what to do you have to do it no cooling and raised radiation levels and you've lost control of thnigs anyway, best option is to think worst case and work back from there, the problems was out of control with the first explosion but they didn't want to admit it, OK were not on the ground but they didn't haven't been seen to bother flying in any kit to help, aparantly the Jap PM wasn't even told till way late in the day I wonder why?.
That said the priority is to keep the cores from melting but I don't think they have and that's a nightmare if not, the second explosion was way far more serious, as I say the main thing is were OK here so long as the cores are buring in an uncontrolled criticallity if so it's not going to be good for anyone as you A) can't get near the thing due to intense radiation levels a criticallity releases, and it will in the end burn through the containment vessel base and will continue to realease activity for some time, that said if it does at least it will finally stop reacting once it dissipate but then you still have to deal with massive levels of radiation and contamination none of which will make getting close to it to try and deal with it,
Personally I don't trust them too much, and the IAEA isn't being honest with us as the last thing they want is a negative immage when it comes to nukes it would be like Turkeys voting for Christmas.0 -
Hi Mell
It makes you wonder why the Japanese, who are always so clever at technological things, haven't thought through more carefully the dangers of their nuclear industry in an area so prone to earthquakes. Maybe they convinced themselves that it would never happen on that scale, but the disaster does demonstrate that the forces of nature can't be ignored.
I feel so sorry for all those poor people who have lost everything, and now they have to worry about radiation too.

Hi Joan yeah I think your right it's to easy to get a tad laid back about it never happening, also they are less than honest when it comes to nuclear power etc, they have had some mess ups in the past and the industry is known for falsifying safety documents in the past, bottom line is don't build them so clost to the surf, thing is it's down to cost here as well, they built the generators off deck but the fuel tanks got wiped out, also the fuel storage pond caught fire so you also have or had burning spent fuel rods so god knows what true levels are I'm sure their playing it down by a fair margin just smells really wrong to me, I know for one thing I wouldn't be happy being there one bit and I've done a lot of active work in the past and know me health physics stuff, thing is Japan is a small country and can't afford to have waste lands like the one around the Chernobyl plant. I hope and prey they sort it those on site are brave people that's for sure, thing is I figure they think they have no choice somones got to do it which is a fair cop, still takes real guts.0

I know why they put them on the coast del I worked on reaserch reactors up at Harwell and did a stint in high radiation health physics, and I am familiar with the so called figure of only 30 dead from Chernobyl, the UAEA keeps reminding people about it but the facts are this, they built them in the totally wrong place and they wern't up to the job, the core unti is masive and it will survive whatever but the Ancillary equipment is the weak point, they should have thought about other things apart from core block strength this accident also shows terrorist only need to take out exterior equipment to cause serious problems and that’s not good.
It’s no point in making the core super strong if you can’t pump water into the bloody thing, and the moment the radiation levels started to rise and cooling was lost it was inevitable what would happen they were dragging their feet and now it’s out of control and their options are very limited, if they had built them and or it on slightly higher ground they would not be in such a mess now it’s a simple fact, but it’s all down to cost at the end of the day.
And as for Chernobyl 30 dead were the support staff and the figure is way to low, the UAEA and IAEA use this as a cop out, we still have kids come over here for rest as the time they spend here extends their lives by a year each time, there are many thousands of ill and dying victims of Chernobyl but no one worries as long term health defects and illness are ignored and deaths are what they focus on, many of the bio robots went back to their villages and died in solitude, don’t take the IAEA figures as truth, Chernobyl killed and maimed many more then they will admit.0 -

Dam right you do,until you've seen a the blue glow of death you ain't go no authority!. As I always said to the people who I covered when in health physics, safe?, yeah no problem, but if you see me running I sugest you follow me!.0 -

Whatever the outcome in Japan it will affect us too.
me and hubby were saying the same last night - this country comes to a standstill when it snows! god help us if we had any kind of disaster.
heart goes out to them all.

We had the big fire at Sellafield but in those days we wern't told squat so we just carried on with our live happily breathnig in all the active smeg, and importantly it was far more nasty than 3 mile Island, Jesus there some dumb **** Homer forgot to turn on the aux cooling!, it was the next shift who came in that did and saved the day, if you cast your mind back we had the Sellafield fire now that was bad the whole reactor was burning and it was air cooled!, anyway 3 mile Island only release Tritum gas so isn't even on the 1-10 scale in my book, this however is getting worse, dropping water on it from a Chinook smells of desperation and is exactly what they did at Chernobyl, so is an admitance the core is exposed to some degree.0
-
Talk about understating the fecking obvious, Sky news keeps bangin on about this is as bad as 3 mile Island now!, WHATTHE!!!!???, did I miss something here, 2 reactors going loop de loo one cracked containment vessel, 3 or 4 spent fuel ponds on fire buildings blown to bits, I think they mean it's between Sellafield and Chernobyl,3 mile island just hasd a slight fuel temp excursion and a small venting of Tritium, nothing else got out, funny if this were in Russia they would be going on about how dangerous it is to us all but the Jap's get away with it talk about double standards!., did it all wrong really didn't they, they should have had the Tusnami last at least it would have put the fires out and washed all the nuclear cack out to sea, mind you that would have upset the Dolphins even more!.0

Hi
Was talking about this other night....I didnt know as was only a youngster at time of Chernobyl that the wind blew it across america and therefore hitting parts of the uk too...My dad told me that in highlands of scotland lots of sheep n cows had to be slaughtered as they would be infected and meat was banned from public consumption for quite a long time afterwards.....It wasnt just scotland apparently as my fellow swimmers told me and one said even now meat is tested for radiation.....
Its so scary isnt it? Well it is to me......

i lived in angelsey when that happened and there was lambs born soon after with extra limbs etc etc that was put down to what happened in russia.
makes you wonder what the true extent of this in japan will be in the futre.0 -
Hi Coco
Oh gosh did things like that happen too...Obviously they did....Im shocked, i mean i knew radiation was deadly but I really didnt know about this till thursday night.....One bloke at swimming said if ever was in a nuclear fallout then best place to be is right next to it, then there is not a drop of you left, i guess it would be quick....He told me about another one where a guy was near some sort of wall and the outline of his body was left where he'd been totally wiped out...Scary things aint they.....

High Elaine don't worry nukes are complex, the shadows your on about are of those who were caught in the heat pulse from the atomic bomb this reactor thing is slightly different, it can't go off like Hiroshoma but it can keep burning and generally emitting large amounts of contamination, thing is we all live with radiation and the Earths core is heated by radioactivity and gives us life on Earth, but Japan has lots all in one place and it's not so good when that happens, reactors like bombs kick off certain types of fall out the most nasty are those who effect kids ie Iodine 131 and Strontium 90 adults can handle more of theses as their bodies are full grown, not sure how bad the whole thing is but the IAEA keep refering it to the same as 3 mile Island which is rubbish, it's a lot lot worse not as bad as Chernobyl, also the problem is that if the cores keep reacting then it's not easy or safe to get to them as the radiation levels in the reactor halls will be deadly, Chernobyl in a was was more catostrophic but better as the fuel blew the bottom out of the reactor and then mixed with sand used for shilding it then flowed into the reactor sub basment and disapaited so the chain reaction stopped, Japan is different it would be better if it went through the reactor floor if they can't get cooling back on.0

Hi Mellman
Well yeah I admit im completely naive as to the nuclear effects fully...
Its just really scary the more i read and i wonder to myself why oh why would any country want to use this in a war? I mean it would completely wipeout humankind wouldnt it? (Tell me if im talking ***p)......
I wonder if this blinking Gaddafi has things like this though that scares me too...I mean he aint hiding down no tunnel like Saddam or going to the mountains or caves like Bin Laden is he? Tell you who we havent heard a dicky bird from throughout lots of this uprising business - Mr Obama (or as me dad says Obarmy).....Seen Hills plenty but no sign of Obama...I think he;s one of the weakest presidents USA has had for as long as i can remember....But then again our co-alition pretty much gives him a run for his money there!!

Hi Elaine I don't think Gadaffi has now,a few years ago the US sent a ship to pick all his "secret" nuke stuff up it was all very public, what happened was the chap who tasked to get the "bomb" for Pakistan one Dr Khan then went a tad stupid and started supplying other ie North Korea Iran and Libya, thing is the CIA knew what he was doing with regards to Pakistan but they turned a blid eye as they needed them to supply weapons to the Mujhadideen way up on the Afghan PAkistan border.
Anyway he then went global for hard cash and got rumbled in the end, the killer was the US intercepted a shipment of gas centrafuges and other kit Khans company was shipping to Gadaffi,it even included a blue print for a Chinese H bomb, the US then told Lybia it wanted a word in it's shell like and the rest is history.
However he could have chemical and bio weapons but no ones really knows, oh don't worry about talking nuclear things and getting it wrong, at least your interested not many are so good on ya!.
The Jap reactors are a serious problem, I use to be a health physics monitor amongst other things so understand the chatter, I've only seen one expert talking reality and he's been on C4 news, I don't trust the IAEA they have a vested interest and have been bouncing around a bit on this, that said so long as they can get a handle on things in time the fall out will decay,I cant for the life of me understand how you can have so many damaged reactors and not have serious levels of isotopes kicked off like Chernobyl, Hydrogen will be radioactive and this is vented from the core by control valves and there will be some Nitrogen plus other common gasses but when they talk about Cesium 137 Iodine 131 and Strontium 90 then this means the fuel rods are damaged and the reactor is leaking as these isotopes only come from fission products within the canned fuel.
But on the upside it can't go bang like nuclear or Hydrogen bomb but it can keep reacting and leaking, thank god it's flippin miles away is all I can say.
Lastly back to Libya, I am really ticked off we are fighting on another front now, Cameron has slipped a gear we should worry about our own rather than this lot, let them sort their own mess out, were effectivly bankrupt and are having to borrow even more money to go play blow up a camel, everytime we get a new government we get a new bloody war it's totally crazy!.0
