Has anyone else experienced this. I've been on and off Hydroxy for about 10 years and this is the first time its stopped working for me. I'm taking two a day and have been in pain on and off for over a week. My PA is getting worse. This is scarey! I've been given Brufen Retard to take along with Omeprazole incase it upsets my stomach. Is anyone else taking Brufen Retard. I'm trying to cope without taking these!

Sorry, can't help, I tried hydroxy for about nine months with no affect...
Was told to just stop taking it, not offered an alternative.. Lol
Best wishes... If it is a flare up I sincerely hope it doesn't last long..

Hi Judy
Sorry you are feeling so rough and that the Hydroxy doesn't seem to working for you any more.
Hopefully you can see the rheumatologist sooner rather than later to discuss alternatives. Not sure what else, you have tried but there are lots of other things out there. Meantime I do think it would be worth taking the Brufen (and the Omeprazole) to see if it gives you some relief. Many of us on here are taking some form of anti-inflammatory so I hopefully will be along soon with some experience of Brufen Retard.
Thinking of you.

I've moved this thread to LWA as it is better suited here and may get more responses.

Hi judy
sorry the hydroxy no longer has an effect on you.....I started taking it well over a year ago along with celebrex and it has helped.
Perhaps your body has got used to it and it is time for a change.
I hope you get a quick rhummy appointment and that the brufen helps while you wait.
Take care

This can happen (and indeed does): what has been a successful treatment suddenly isn't so good. I am not a doctor and so don't fully understand the reasons why but my thinking has been (when it has happened to me) that over a period of time the body must get used to a certain med, or ingredient of that med, and it stops reacting to it. There are alternatives out there so your GP is the one to help on this front. Let's hope you can find another med that works just as well, if not better. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi
I too am on hydroxy and have been for years. It's such an inoffensive drug isn't it?
As for the ibuprofen, if you can tolerate it I would as I also take arcoxia (also and anti-inflamatory like ibuprofen) at times.
I hope it settles down for you with the ibuprofen, and that it is a quick flare which goes AWAY :x
If you really can't bear it maybe you need to try to get a rheumy appt sooner rather than later?
Love

Thank you for all your replies. It's really, really comforting to know that there are people that really understand. I saw my GP last night and she said my arthritis is getting worse and that's why the Hydroxy isn't working, and I must take the Brufen with the stomach tablets only as and when needed. My next appointment to see my Consultant is in June. Hey ho!0

Judy, I hope you get things sorted before june can you ring you rheumy's secretary to see if you could get an earlier appointment.
I started by taking Hydroxy then had Methotrexate added in. I did ask my rheumy nurse a couple of years later if the hydroxy did anything and she said it may not seem to but the meds work in layers like a mesh, each one blocking the inflamation a bit, so they work together. So i still take the Hydroxy.
I really hope you get some help soon,
Tracey0
