I was thrilled and amazed to see two newts in my garden pond today. They are an endangered species, so it's nice to know that they are happily living in the pond along with several frogs and fish. They are like tiny dinosaurs swimming around, and fascinating to watch.

But what puzzles me is how did they get there :?: There were no newts in the pond last year as far as I know, and we don't live near to a stream or lake, so how could they have found their way to my garden pond :? Has anyone got any ideas :?:

Steady Tony ya daft bugger!, Joan they will be around in the garden and come and go as they please, we have them here just common newts but their also in the soil, I was doing some fencing about 5 years ago and sadly killed one it was down by the side of a fence post I was digging out, what made us laugh though was our nipper saw one for the first time when she was around 8 and came running in saying a lizard was drowing in the pond!. Oh frogs do the same the hide out and stay under the soil during the winter, they are also great slug killers so we love having them around.

I've got old farm ponds at front and back/side of the house, so get loads of frogs/toads and newts.....

    They just started moving......

Seems like all the ones at back of house, seem to want to be in the pond at the front, and versa visa.......

For about 3 weeks, the road gets very 'squishy'........

Thanks for all your replies, folks :!: I think the newts in my pond are just the common type. That's probably why they've chosen to come to my garden :lol:

It's still a mystery as to why they have appeared this year, but we bought a lot of new pond plants last year, so maybe the eggs were amongst that. Anyway, I'm glad that they've taken up residence, even if they are mynewt, Tony :lol:
