This looks to be another cognitive or thinking technique, very useful, I use them a lot as part of my inventory for use against arther.

It's amazing if it works! I was freaked out by the endless strechy finger!

Interesting that you use it in a form Airwave... can I ask what you do and how it helps?

Imagine if it really can help... wow...

My daughter is having CBT sessions to try to relax her and thus prevent her dreadful migraines...she is doing some stuff not dissimilar to this

relaxing and stretching can be sooo useful can't it?

Dont think fingers can stretch that far though..... :???: ......can they?

    Hi MissKat,

I use the mind a huge amount via visualisation and its truly the best defence I have against this shift bone stuff..... It really does help and sometimes really work.

Might be worth trying either Airwaves type or the visualization thing? Cris x

I have learnt to use thinking or cognitive techniques to take my mind off of arther, like a lot of things in life its just something that can be learnt but needs to be practiced until it becomes an everyday part of your life. In those dark pits of time in the middle of the night, we need to reach out and use the resources near to us.

There are many other things to do as well, exercise, practical things, music, talk to a friend, write, computer, walk, etc. I practice the breathing techniques also, these can be used to send you off to sleep or back to sleep or even just to calm you down(and lower your BP), as you relax, your muscles allow the arteries and smaller vessels to enlarge and increase the circulation, warmer hands and feet, wonderful!

I generally use the two techniques together, starting with the breathing and then the mind technique, before you know it you are relaxed and sleeping, they become remarkably effective at any time of the day.

To continue without the techniques is to allow the symptom cycle to continue, the chronic condition, pain, tense muscles, fatigue, difficult emotions and all the way back to the start, the cycle must be stopped or interrupted. These techniques are just a part in your armory against arther just as medication and the work of the medical teams are.

One technique you may like to try, replacing all negative thoughts, which are just a bad habit, with positive thoughts and form a good train of thoughts. I find that people will not use these ways to help unless they believe it for themselves and it becomes their way of life.

These are just a few of the techniques, described very briefly which you can use against arther or indeed any long term condition, I am not a perfect practitioner by any means, but it helps, go on an AC course and learn. 8)

Gosh, thanks guys for your input - it's so interesting. A few of my friends mentioned trying yoga, pilates and such... maybe I was too dismissive, thinking it wasn't for me. I know these use breathing techniques as a major part...

AC course? I just 'googled' that and it came up with Air Conditioning! Heehee! 'Something' Cognitive perhaps?!

I think I do do this everyday in a way. I'm still trying to be as 'normal' (hate to use that word) in my everyday life as possible and not let the old Arther get me down... keep myself busy, and try to surround myself with my cheery pals... but as you say sometimes, you do have those dark moments... and it'd be good to learn a way to get past them quickly than succumb to them.

I'd need a big Mirage box to fit my legs in

Seriously though, the mind is a powerful tool and if it helps and works for some folk in the future, then that is great.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.
