Bluebell woods

Yesterday I went for a walk to see some bluebell woods near where I live. They were really beautiful and the best I've ever seen them. Bluebells grow in other countries, but only in Britain do they form such large carpets of blue on the woodland floor in springtime. I took the photograph below, but it was impossible to capture the full beauty of the scene.
Sadly, this icon is threatened by the destruction of ancient woodlands, climate change, and by the introduced Spanish bluebell. The trouble is, the Spanish species has ‘escaped’ into our woodlands and is the worst enemy of the native bluebell because it will hybridise with it. When it does, because its genes are dominant, the traits of the British bluebell disappear within a very few generations. The British Native bluebell is more delicate than its Spanish relative, with the intensely blue flowers on one side of the slightly drooping stem. It would be very sad if it disappeared from our woods in the future.

I took this photo of a butterfly too. I think it's a peacock butterfly.

These are my favourite flowers Joan. I have such happy memories of days gone by walking through the bluebell woods in Sussex and have told my 2 oldest girls I want my ashes spread in the Arlington bluebell woods when I have gone!
