I have never used BitTorrent, but I do know how the system works.
As with everything that is downloaded from online, some files are clean and some are infected. You take a risk as soon as you click a download button. With BitTorrent if the source file is infected when you download the file, your computer becomes infected and you also pass it on. The file could have passed through many sources which increases the risk.
Frostwire is a copy of Limewire Pro and works exactly the same. Vuze seems to be slightly the better client according to cnet.com. They should be downloaded from a reliable source and scanned before installing.
BitTorrent client programs, (such as the Vuze/Frostwire), are free Download/Upload Managers which run on your computer, they download a file (or part of it) from any client online that has the file that you want, rather than downloading all of the file from only one source, you also pass on files if requested to anyone who wants a file that you have. So, your computer is acting as an online server, you download a file from a client, others can then download it from you. Clients do not scan for viruses or infections, all files thus need to be scanned by a good anti-virus when you download them.
There is a guide at http://www.bittorrent.com/help/guides/beginners-guide which explains the system in greater detail.Joseph0 -
