Hiya,
Wanting to ask all those people with OA in hip, how (and where) the pain is? Do you get pain when sitting?
Thanks,
Magenta x

Hi Magenta
I have learned how hard this question is to answer, my hip pain started in my knee, referred pain they call it, the xrays show both my hips are bone on bone, but apparently this dosnt always mean you are in a lot of pain.
The normal pain I am told is in your groin, because I dont have that pain they are thinking my pain is coming from my back.
Some people do get hip pain when sitting, if you google it you can get pain down the thigh, in the knee, in the bum.
Im sorry if i am confusing you , my consultant said that the time to have the op is when you cant do everyday things without pain, otherwise you wake up from the op and dont see any improvement if you know what I mean.
Sorry that was long winded, but it does make sense to have pain when you are sitting has the hip is bent.
Hope I have helped a little

Hi Magenta,
yes I did have pain sitting - some chairs were more comfortable than others and sitting for too long always caused stiffness and pain. The pain was a deep pain (I'm no good at describing it) and was in the buttock, groin and the side of the leg. As my mobility worsened I had trigger point pains in the muscles as well and some muscles got very tight and sore too. I also had referred pain in my knee and back.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Hi Barbara and Speedy,
This all sounds like the pain etc. that I'm getting. I had an xray done today on my hips and since that the pain has escalated and I've felt quite sick. I'll know the results in a couple of weeks. But what if it's not arthritis? What if it's the fibro (as my dr is convinced that's what it is) then there's nothing to be done except increasing my pain meds.
Thanks for your info,
Hope you are both well,
Magenta xx0 -
I've had one hip-replacement already and have O/A in the other hip and several other joints including my lower spine... my hip pain started with Sciatica and then pain in the groin and over the hip joint , gradually increasing in intensity till I had resting pain ( just sitting) and pain at night (this was a deep in the tissue pain in my thigh and knee). Eventually when I was bone on bone it was excrutiating just to walk but I did continue working although on very light duties...Our worst times are always our best lessons.0

Hi
My hip pain was similar to Tanith's.
I was also 'bone on bone' (ie no cartilage left) and it was excruciating ..also the hip seemed to 'dislocate' when I got up from a sitting position..

Thanks Tanith and Marion,
All info has been very helpful,
Did anyone use a stick?

Hi
I get the pain in my buttock and in my left hip.

Hi Magenta,
Agree,as all the others describe.
My hip pain went on for years, with everyone offering different scenarios.
eventually when the getting out of the chair, couldn't walk with out sticks, restless sleep.THEN, they operated...
The xray should not have any bearing on you feeling sick, but the underlying tension, will not have helped, do hope that passes.
I was advised early on to use a stick, on the opposite side to the affected hip...But ended up using two...
Do hope you will get some answers soon.
In the meantime everyone here will always endeavour to give support.
Do take care.

Hi Kneegirl and Kate,
Thanks to you, and all of you that have posted. I'm not great the now, had to take Friday off my work and don't know about going in tomorrow. I'm hurting everywhere and feel a bit low.
The hips-I've been thinking about a stick but keep feeling-nah, I'm surely not bad enough for that. It's affecting my sleep and my everyday life which can't be good.
It's bad but I'm so hoping the xrays show up something cos if they don't I'm going to be left with another 'don't know why you're in pain' and I sometimes think my GPs think I'm making it all up.
I'll let you know how I get on and thanks again,

Hey!!! well done you,, keep positive(Doh! a nightmare I know)
It is so frustrating, when nobody listens, believe me I have been there, tried everything, that they asked me to do.Physio, Rheumy,Accupuncture, Pain clinic,Chiro,G.P's, even saw a consultant surgeon, who refused even though it had been suggested by Gp and another consultant. It took me a further three years, to get OP.So I can empathise with you...
Still wait for your results, talk with your Gp again and say how it is affecting your quality of life and sleep.
And DO try the stick, remember opposite hand ,to affected limb.
We will wait for feed back.

Hi Kate,
I do try and be positive but I had a wee cry at my Mums today. I felt better after it though. My Mum is trying to push me to go private but I've said to wait and see what xrays come back with. My other problem is, I always thought it was my left hip causing me the most pain but think it's actually my right. I'd need 2 sticks-need to look out for any BOGOF offers

Physio on Tuesday wouldn't give me a stick but I feel quite wobbly though am managing to walk ok - where could I get one from? x seeing physio blokey on Friday afternoon x0

Hi Kneegirl,
When I googled sticks, you can get them in several shops-just go in and buy one. I wouldn't know if they were the best though. I'm going to do a search for posts-I'm sure I've seen one years ago about walking sticks.

Hi magenta
I do use a stick, but I have found it is making my other hip ache...mind you that ones show just has bad on my xrays.
But I do have Arthur in my spine, and they have said it is impossible to tell which is giving the most pain.
I know very soon i will need my THRs, but it not easy to make the decision, knowing I will still be in pain.
I do wish you well with it all, its not always has straightforward has people think.
Get your results and then sit down with your family , its good to have input from others, and we are always here when you need us.
Love

HI Magenta
I have OA in both my hips and knees. I do get sore sitting. My hips and bottom get very sore and so does the base of my spine but I do find that if I get up and walk about every 15/20 minutes it helps.
It took me a long, long time to accept using a walking stick but now it is definately my 'best friend'.
Do you drink diet drinks by any chance? I found that the Aspartame in them caused the pain in my hips and knees to feel worse and so did drinking orange juice but once I stopped drinking these drinks I didn't have so many flare-ups...just a thought!
Sending you gentle hugs.0 -
We are supposed to avoid citrus fruits/juices - maybe have apple juice flutter?

@Kneegirl and Magenta..
For what it is worth, here in Devon UK.there are several Medical aid helpers.
For example like this one.
http://www.devonline.gov.uk/community/?action=show&doc=/db/CommunityDirectory/data/015-010349.xml
Ask at the Hospital or your GP Surgery for the Therapy Team that is associated with your area, and then if they cannot help you in supply of sticks, then they may have a contact, similar to the link..
What you do not want is to make things worse by having incorrect stability and height.Or try Google..'Helping hands medical aids(area)'
Doh!!! why do we have so many, hurdles to climb, when all we want is answers and help..
@Magenta, glad the little cry helped,if only non sufferers could understand ,how living with the continual pain, drags you down.
They would be less likely to say things like 'well there is always someone worse off than you' Grr!! I am sure we all realise that only too well, but it doesn't actually benefit us, when we are feeling vulnerable.A Hug and sympathy would work wonders at that moment in time.
Take care all...
Kate
Take care.

I could probably of benefitted from using a stick but I have O/A in my thumbs, fingers and wrist so using a stick is just too painful... as others have said you can just buy one yourself and adjust it... hope you get some relief soonOur worst times are always our best lessons.0
-
Thanks Kate (again ) and Tanith,
I too have OA elsewhere-shoulders, and clicky wrists! I don't think I would be able to use a stick, well, maybe not for very long but maybe just to help me get to and from work and the shops? I'm still at the 'I'll look daft stage'.

PS I don't drink orange juice and only a wee drop of diet lemonade every so often xx0 -
Kneegirl......I found that out the hard way I used to drink fresh orange juice diluted down with water but still had problems with it, so now as you say I drink apple juice when I get fed up with plain old water :roll:0
-
Hi Flutterbye,
I'm sorry I didn't thank you for your earlier post  I'll need to try coming off the diet lemonade completely I hate apple juice!
