hello everyone

just thought some of you might be able to help with my question ?

i got OA and am wondering if soon it might mean i need to buy a new mattress for our double bed, what sort would you get, or would a memory foam one be best, but don't memory foam make you rather warm in the summer?

i leave that with you all and let me know what you got or what works for you.

It's not what works for us, it's what works for you! I think you just have to get out and about into bed shops and try a few out. Don't lie there for two minutes and think 'Yup, that's fine', you should spend at least half an hour lying there, turning on your side, your back, sitting up and reading, to try to get a feel for what is the most comfortable. You may feel a bit of a twerp but if you get the bed wrong it's a costly mistake - and not just money-wise.

For what it's worth I cannot sleep in a double with Mr DD, we have a king-size (the next bed will be a super king, he don't know that yet!) and our mattress isn't memory foam, it's the classic pocket-sprung, but one face has an extra layer of wool padding. Remember that mattresses need turning -a chore if ever there was one! I am not sure if memory ones do, and yes, they do make you hotter and leccy blankets shouldn't be used with them. DD

    Hello Sylvia

I did some research into memory foam mattresses a while ago and there does seem to be a general consensus that, comfy tho they may be, they can make you very hot. Interested to hear what others have to say on this.

Hi, I've just written a reply and its gone into fresh air!

I said what Daisy said really, its very individual and it may work for you, it does me and my husband and we don't find it hot in summer. At the moment we have a mattress topper made of memory foam, as we'd just bought a new bed when I started having problems and several years on it's still fine. Its also cheaper than a new mattress! I've also heard that memory foam mattresses make you hot and I have a memory foam topper (3 inches) which doesn't seem to make me any hotter than normal.

Like DD said, it really is individual. I looked into getting a proper memory foam mattress but I didn't find any of them that amazing, not for the price. Have a look around and then, when you've found the right bed, shop around for the price too!

    Hi,

I've got OA in my lower spine, neck and knees. I used to wake up quite frequently because of the pain in my back, and also be extremely stiff every morning. About 6 months ago my husband and I decideed to buy a memory foam mattress topper to pad our 'orthopaedic' sprung mattress, which was very firm. There was a sale on on memory foam mattressess, so it turned out to be as cheap to get a whole new mattress as a decent topper.

I am now much less stiff in the mornings, and my back rarely wakes me in the night. We haven't yet used it through the summer, so it's hard to know how hot we'll get as the weather (hopefully!) warms up, but I think the benefits so far would outweigh a fair bit of discomfort in the hot weather. We have a cotton mattress cover over the top, which I hope will keep us a bit cooler.

I also have less pain in my shoulders and neck - though as I also got a new, thinner, pillow at the same time, I don't know if this is entirely down to the mattress.

As others have said, it's a very individual thing, so no-one can definitely say what will be best for you. For me, though, it's definately ben worth while getting the memory foam mattress!

The memory foam, you ' sink ' into it - it ' moulds ' to your body :?:

Do you get stuck in it  and nothing to do with being hot and sticky :!:

How about feather mattresses / toppers :?: Anyone had experience

Single memory foam mattresses for us on a kingsize bed. Our mattresses can be electronically lifted at the head/leg end. As we have separate mattresses we can please ourselves  I have an electric blanket my side and all seems ok. I LOVE our bed. Most comfortable place in the home :lol: We also have a single duvet each on our double bed. Again, bliss.

We have a 3" memory foam topper on our normal mattress , coupled with my numerous memory pillows , I now manage to sleep well and comfortably or maybe I'm just so boxed in by pillows and blanket cradles that I just can't move ! Either way , I wouldn't be without it . Jillyb

We have memory foam on a kingsize here at our little palace. It is extremely comfortable but it does make me a little hot, especially during the warm months. Other than that, highly recommended!

hmmm thats rather interesting, thanks everyone keep adding thats why i started this one as i thought as the saying goes " 2 heads are better than one " and also we all been there so we know what works and dont.

so far i going to the side of a memory foam one, i just wait and see what everyone says before i make my mind up.

should i get a shop to order one for me or do it myself, hmm i dont want any hassle of getting it here where i live, as things are not as easy as they are for others.

    keep ideas flowing.

    Its whatever suits you.
I have a memory form mattress one cheaper one and our old bed now the guest bed in the loft has the nasa memory foam alot more expensive but so much nicer and effective than the cheaper version (still £400)

My 2 younger daughters and my son love their memory forms but my eldest daughter hates them and prefers and orthopeadic mattress springs and all.

try them out I know somewhere does a trial for 30 days I will try locate the link for you.

    Theresa xx
ps our nasa one is 12 years old although been a guest bed for 4 years or so of those (with protectors washable of course)

We got an early memory foam. It did tend to be hot at times and turning over was an exercise in itself but when your feet stick out (and therefore jam into an ordinary mattress) it's well worth it. I solved the heat problem by using blankets not duvets - fling a layer off or pull it back on.

However, 2 years ago we got a new bed and a mattress that was mostly sprung but with the (integral) top 3" or so in memory foam. Brilliant! Not as liable to get hot. Just as comfy and supportive. Not cheap but well worth the money.

By the way, the term 'orthopaedic', as applied to mattresses, is meaningless. There is no standard. They're just usually a bit harder.

DD - I/we sleep in a 'double king' (In USA they're called California Kings) at my son's. Amazing. No need to ever meet up in the middle if you don't want to and quite a trek if you do. Only problem is, unless you live over there you need to buy the bed first then build the house round it.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi, I am new to this forum but thought I would join in here.
I decided to try out a memory foam mattress and a feather topper for my existing mattress and by far I preferred the feather topper. This one I could snuggle down into it and it just coccooned me in lovliness....the memory foam was a bit firmer and not as comfy for me. My DH on the other hand preferred the memory foam, so we are all different, depends what you are looking for from your mattress topper. You do have to shake the feather topper every day but it is so light so not a great problem to do that.
QVC allow you to buy on a sale or return basis which lets you try them at home.

    Hi

We have a 3" memory foam topper on our ordinary matress and wouldn't be without it.
My mum and dad bought a proper full memory foam matress and absolutely hated it. It also made dad too hot.
They ended up buying a matress with a built in topper instead and find that much more comfortable.

We had a king size but now sleep in a superking (like two singles pushed together in size) despite my husband being six foot tall and nearly as wide we always have a lovely 2 ft gap between us so it doesnt get as hot. (I suppose not always a positive but as these hotter nights draw ever nearer I will be glad of that space) also we can use differenct covers i use a sheet my hubby a duvet and its not uncomfortable as no mans land in the middle takes up the slack.

Just a thought...at Ike# you can try out the mattresses at home, and change then if you are not happy....
I have a feather topper....I love it its like sleeping on a cloud....downside you need to shake them regular....so if your hands are sore..you would have to get someone else to do it
    Good luck

Oh sticky you do make me smile. There is absolutely nothing worse than cannoning off each other in bed, I loathe it. I reckon we will go for two 3' beds pushed together, that way we can both have the mattress (and duvet tog) we like without the other having to suffer! Is that a thought for you, only49? Two separate single beds? Yes it doubles the laundry etc but you can end up with what you like rather than having to compromise. DD

Hi, We recently decided to get a new matress and we hunted high and low and even tried different beds in Dreams! Eventually we decided on:- Rest Assured pocket sprung with layer of memory foam. It is the business it is like these beds you have in top hotels and it is the same they use on P & O cruise ships! That is where we got the idea to buy a new matress from our last cruise!!
If you want good surport this is the one!

thanks everyone for all your help, took it all on board and went armed with a lot of info this morning, and found one which is what i think will be the right one, the easiest way to describe it is, its a mattress with memory foam combined with a standard mattress, hope that makes sense.

had a busy day, even got hubby to see what he thought, got old one out and just waiting for new one now.

    thanks for all your help.

    much appreciated
