Hiya
I went to gym for second time today at 1.30pm....It wasnt as good as first app...First of all was kept waiting long time at reception (how those women get jobs i dont know, they ignore everyone and work at their pace only)....Then was told i was booked in for thursday but my card said today 10th....?? Was reluctantly given a lift key to go up see person, told about 10 times "dont forget to give it back".....Gets up there and its full of pumping bodies all running like theyre on acid....All young and muscly, me with flab n sitck, two young girls looked at me as if to say "what you gonna do here?"......Had to stand get blood pressure taken again, fill in paperwork, couldnt sit down as the seat was too low and wasnt offered other seat.....Then was shown machines, first one cycling machine which i cant do, she tried to bend my knee but i wouldnt let her do it too much, i cannot do it simple as....Then walking to other machines thought one lass were having a fit as she was lying on her side doing spasmodic movements to one side!!! Eventually got it over and done with but then wonderful reception gave me a card whcih they couldnt get my detials on....A|nother customer walked away in disgust....
Eventually i got out and was generally disappointed they hadnt remembered my needs and capabilities...

Hi Elaine, sorry to read of your experience, it's certainly not very encouraging...for your benefit and for the benefit of others I hope you are going to take this up with the management, you really shouldn't have to put up with that. It's not always easy to mention/complain yourself, but, GP's surgeries should be equipped to speak up for you. Keep going darl, you've made the inital effort, don't let them put you off. Good luck and keep well. John x0

Hi John
Im not sure what to do in all honesty...Last week seemed to go well but today seemed as if they had never met me before. I just didnt let the instructor move my leg anymore than i knew if would go, its simply not worth the pain afterwards....
I will see how they are next week, suppose give everything a second chance....
Thanks for your good luck wishes, will save them...

That is disgusting treatment, if you had filled in your form and they knew about your knee...they had know right telling you to do anything you aren't comfortable.
Has for the posers well just try and blank them out you head, and just keep thinking about the exercises you are doing
Do they stand over you when you are doing them, they should just to make sure you do them right.
Then when you get confident they will leave you to it.
Good luck with it all

Hi Barbara
Yeah i wasnt impressed but i suppose ive got to think im not the only disabled person trying to use a gym...It was just disappointing after last week, maybe thats the high and low of it...
I mean i think you can tell by looking at me and the fact i tell them i have less than 30% bend in my knee that i cant go on an exercise bike or fully bend knee at all....
I do stand my ground and dont allow myself to be pushed into stuff i dont feel comfortable doing so..
Try again...

sorry elaine that this time didn't go as well for you.
Keep your chin up and try again next week.
Hopefully they will remember you and your needs and it will be a much better session.
Good luck

Hi Elaine,
I am sorry things went so differently this time. I wonder if Thursday has a different set of staff and they just got the date wrong??
As you say all you can do is try again next week.

HI I
Well I wont quit and will try again its just it was so different from last week...All those pumping, agile bodies leaping around made me feel quite inadequiate...

Hi Elaine,
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience.
Can't you request to have the same staff as the first time if they were better?
Hope next week is 3rd time lucky for you.
Good luck,
Anita. x0 -
Hi Anita
Well it was the same girl who seemed to forget i cannot sit on low seats to fill in forms, and had to do it standing up, tried to get me on cycling machine with me 30% bend in bad knee.
I am giving it one or two more goes...Last night found out hydro pool is doing an aqua exercise class and signed up for that so if dont do gym will do my hydro twice a week plus walks..

Hi Elaine,
Sorry you are having a disappointing time....I thought it was just me. The first time was OK except I think he made me to do much.....2nd time I went into the gym...This is supposed to be Healthy Life and someone specially trained is supposed to be there to supervise you and make sure you dont do exercises that will harm you. It took me 15 mins to find anyone and get them to come in, missed a couple of weeks because i was away and the 3rd time was the same and the 4th time the same again.....15 mins each time looking for someone ......I still think I'm doing too much. So I'm not going back.
Hope you keep on with your sessions and it gets better
Love

Hi Hileena
Well you know reading your post isnt it striking me/you that there is a need for people who want to do light exercise, not be pushed to limit for 2hours plus and in an uncomfortable environment. There really needs to be gyms set up for people with disabilities/needs doesnt there?
The good thing is that you or I can recognise when things arent right and be able to do something about it. I hope you put in a comment/complaint about the so called service you received.

Hi Elaine,
Hydro may be better for you. I used to go hydro and it's amazing what moves you can do under water than you can't do on dry land!! I used to do loads of squats just cos I could lol! Needless to say I can't do them out of water.
Take care good luck with the next appointment. I am guessing the staff are all young fit people who really don't understand the problems we have!

Hi Anita
Well yeah go to hydro on thrusady nights and last week did 14 lengths of pool, a good night for me...So I can get my leg going after initially being so stiff when first get in....
Gym is all young uns and last time i felt like a right old cronie!!! Seroiusly i just need someone who understands the concept of 30% bend and I cant get up from floor or kneel...Not too much to ask is it...

Hi Elaine,
Gosh 14 lengths, I just used to exercise and one length nearly killed me so good on you.
No it's not too much to ask I think it would be handy in these gyms if they had staff that had some medical training.
Take care,
