Toni what is the lighting like in the hall? If it is gloomy then paint a pale colour. There are so many beautiful colours the world is your oyster.
Taking down the dado will require a lot of remedial work .Instead you could choose two toning colours, darker below and lighter on the top half.

There are certain websites where you can basically input a plan of your rooms/hallway & experiment with the colours etc to get an idea of what goes etc.....

    Best of luck...

Take it off one side and see how it looks. If you like it take off the other side too: if not, put it back up. If your hall is dark then go for a lighter colour, if it is very bright then you could tone it down a bit. I have just managed to get calamine lotion on me keyboard. I hate the sun. DD

    Ah thanks everyone

It IS a gloomy hall really....having the porch interior door changed to more glass and Del - the dado is soooo not original

The house is only 16 years old (same as the girls!)

Light colours then....as light as possible and the radiator cover si going as well

I want a piccie of them on the stairs

Tony l will google those sites

Toni our hall is gloomy too with no additional lighting other than the standard 2 bulbs.I have a light carpet and cream walls. However these do show the dirt and spills. We took the banister away because I found it easier to slide my shoulder down the wall when in pain so there is one big expanse of cream wall.
I did once see lights set into the stairs and thought they were a good idea for a gloomy hall.A bit like a runway at an airport!

Hi Toni, Im going to have to redo the whole hall, stairs & landing. just waiting for a date for stairlift to be installed as the storage heater has to be moved & OH need to replace part of the laminate flooring.
we debating a darkish cream on the bottom, painting the dado white then a light cream on top.
the carpet on stairs needs cleaning too  Going to hire one of those rug doctors from t...o's Every little helps :lol: just got to save a few pennies & boot the OH up the @rse & we can make a start.

i hope you have got some ideas as to what to do.
The lights your on about arent that expensive to buy its just the fitting into the ceiling. My ex did ours in our old house when we were together & there lovely & bright (Unlike him  )
Good luck with the dim hall & the prom, debs
