Now I ‘m pumping iron

Well, not a lot of iron, you understand, but I did think it was about time I got the weights out again for my daily quad exercises. It’s years since I did weights cos it’s so fiddly but today I marched into the bedroom with my 1lb and 8oz weights from the kitchen scales (Boy did my husband look scared!) and my oven gloves, dropped the weights into the pocket, wrapped it round my ankle (An exercise in itself if your shoulders, elbows, wrists and finger joints are all knackered too) and tried my straight leg raises. It was good and, yes, it does make a difference. The back-of-knee muscles do feel…..well….stretched and freer.
Will I keep it up? MAKE ME. Go on. I double dare you.

Well done, Sticky.
Maybe you will inspire me to get my fat bum off the sofa and do something.
Or maybe not
The only exercise I get is walking faster past the gym just in case the gits drag me in, perhaps I should do that 3 times a dayGeri XXX0 -
Thanks everyone. I'm actually being serious (for once) Starting it's the easy bit. Continuing's where it gets not so appealing and I'm soooo good at making up excuses I almost believe.
Well done with the swimming, Frogmorton. On no account use weights! If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Well done Stickywicket, please post a report tomorrow after you have done a repeat performance ... we will be checking up on you!!
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Oh you do make me laugh Sticky! You have such a wonderful way with words.
Seriously though, I am WELL impressed.
Love Tilly xxx0 -
Well done any excercise is good! keep up the good work.

Sticky i am very impressed and am confident you will keep it up.
Maddie says she will come round everyday and watch you and make sure that you are lifting you leg high enough for her to touch you foot, so each time you lift your foot you will get a nudge with a cold wet nose.... lovely. She says you are such good friends now after the hours you spent together in the last week.
Keep up the good work.

Only you could come up with the wonderful visual image of oven gloves and weights. I have now taken it one step further with a Warhol-inspired idea of oven gloves with the classic Campbells soup tins, one per pocket - full ones of course - as a repeated lithograph. Offers in excess of three grand will be considered.
Seriously, stick it on the tips/hints thread, others need to know that there is no reason for NOT doing weighted leg raises! What a clever idea, sticky, and keep doing them. Just doing ten a day (how long would that take, a couple of minutes?) could be of real benefit to you. I wonder if I could put a brimming pint glass in each pocket, ecercise then reward myself? Please send my regards to TLD. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
Thanks to your encouragement everyone I did it again. Well, thanks to my fear of you all asking how I got on on only my second day and me having to reply that, actually, I....er....didn't.
Madwestie - I think Maddie was less interested in licking me and more interested in the fact that the oven gloves had been used for taking the meat out of the oven last night. It's OK. I know my place.
DD - It takes me longer to wind the oven gloves round my ankles in such a way that they don't drop off than it does to do the exercises. You can buy weights which wrap round & fasten with velchro. I borrowed some once. Easy to get on & a nightmare to get off. Had to wander round in leg irons 'til DLT got back.
A pint in each pocket??? Just talk me through the practicalities of that, please. I thought you had more respect for a decent pint.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

I do respect a good pint, I think this is a lovely mixture of incentive and reward. Do the exercises carefully so as not to spill a drop of the precious cargo, then gulp with wild abandon once the exercise is complete. The great skill comes when one is on one's fourth round of exercises.Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

 DD fourth time round that's 6 pints i would be on the floor..
Sticky Maddie says she enjoyed the oven glove licking but can you put more meat juices on it next time please....
Keep up the good work we will be watching..well actually if i do DD's excerises i will be sleeping but that's another story.
Tracey0 -
8 pints actually - even I might need to replace the pint glasses with half-pint ones. Half pints. Ye gods. Have I come to that? The shame. :oops:Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Sorry DD i must have passed out after the first 6...

I've never considered using filled pint glasses for doing leg exercises before. But think I will stick to using them for arm exercising (especially the right arm!).......................... :P''Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy''. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)0 -
Hi Sticky,
Well done for inventiveness as well as doing the exercises. Just one question tomorrow’s Sunday lunch does involve a roast??
Lv, I x0 -
Hi Sticky,
Well done and good idea....... hey you need to get them muscles working as you have to be a foal alarm again quite soon.... on another piebald actually but not as big and more pony like..... and oddly marked
Like Speedy's report each day idea.....
For what its worth I use weights as well..... muscles are our best defence as you know.
KEEP IT UP GIRL..... come on up and down and up and down...... thats like that song that was a hit a few years ago but not been used in an advert yet A (((( )))) and a bucket of encouragement Cris xx0 -

It’s OK, madwestie. So was she. Don't tell anyone.
Hey, I see we’re on foalwatch again.
Right, all you lovely people. It’s working well. I no longer dare log on here before ironing my pumps. It’s getting easier & my back’s no longer protesting. What shall I chuck in next? Keep it clean, please. (Well, all things in moderation.)
DD – I don’t wish to sound churlish. I applaud the incentive/reward tactic but I fear even with a mere ½ pint per pocket I’d be sleeping in the stuff tonight.
Prefabkid47 – Don’t forget the left arm needs exercising too. You have to be dedicated to these pints – sorry, exercises.
Ironic – you’ll be relieved to learn I’ve now fished out an old pair of oven gloves. More hygienic for both cooking and exercising. And it saves running (Who am I kidding?) into the bedroom every time I need to open the oven doot.
Hey! I’m in foal again! Great news, skezier. ‘Oddly marked’ is no problem at all. Me too. Very oddly marked. She’s my soulmate. Am I on the roof again? If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

It's the only stamina I have left, beer stamina. I have loads of that. Keep up the good work stickywicket - if you are already feeling some benefit then surely that is reward enough. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Good work sticky that you are sticking to your guuns and doing the weightts.
Just had a thought...... ....what about putting the weight in your OH sock.....NO not while he is wearing it. ...a spare one. ....then fasten it round your leg with a big safety pin.
The weight would be in the middle so you could pin the toe and opening together.
Anyway at least you know i have beeen thinking about you even if the suggestion is more hassle than the gloves
Take care Juliepf x0 -

Julie, you don't want to see me with safety pins. Let's just say they're unsafe in my hands. It'd take me longer to fasten it than to do the exercises.
Anyway, the old oven glove is better as it's longer so it wraps round and stays put. I'm doing more and to a longer count so, if all continues like this, I may chuck a wheat bag into the mix by the end of the week.
P.S. How was the shopping trip?If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

So Mrs foal Alarm hows the exercises going I mean you have to stay on and this one not only is oddly marked (she has a black mask like a batman mask... but not the ears... though hers are small.... ) she is smaller and more like a barrel so get those legs working!
Hope it is gong well really? ((( ))) and a cuppa cus you have to drink and that alcohol stuff ain't no good for you xx0 -
skezier - like I said, I can relate to 'oddly marked' so we'll be fine together.
Big barrel, eh? I've ridden two with big barrels. Good thing was there was no danger of falling off cos I was totally wedged. Bad news was no leg aids at all cos I couldn't move 'em. Maybe I'd better chuck another ton into the oven gloves. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
