Hi,

I know there's a few of you that have arthritis in their jaw. I was
wondering if any of you have had any kind of procedure done in the joint?

Thanks,
Magenta x

    Hi Jilly,
I'm going into hospital next Friday (hopefully, unless I catch my wee girls cold!) for injections into both sides of my jaw. Getting a general anaesthetic for it. Waiting for physio for my neck and thumbs. I'm struggling with my jaw and neck and it's giving me a funny feeling in my throat. When my joints are sore, my throat is narrowing. Very weird.

How are you? I'm going to read your new post now, so sorry if you've already explained it all in there. I hope you're ok,

    Eileen xx

I complained constantly to my dentist/gp about the pain in my jaw and just kept putting down to a day at the dentist and him forcing my jaw open for too long...eventually, I had had enough, and, asked if it could be checked out properly...result being arthritis in/on the jaw. Which eventually lead me having injections in the jaw to settle it down...don't want to sound negative, but, it was only short lived the relief of the pain. I tend to bare with it now and I think the MST's I take over-ride a little to allow me to manage. Johnx

    Hi,
I often get pain in my jaw due to PsA, for a long while I thought it was tooth ache, but I could go for days and weeks with no pain. When my jaw is bad I get earache, and pain is like its in the bone and it shoots up the side of my face and hurts the top of my head. I find its not a bareable pain either if that makes any sense. The doctor has just increased my pain medication to 30/500 co-codamol and this often doesnt touch the pain I want to go and see the dentist just to be certain but at the moment cannot afford it.

I think there is such an opperation as a Jaw Joint replacement, but i might be wrong and completly made it up... :???:

    Hi Eileen,

I may have said in the past but I had a 'clicky' jaw as a teenager and I was given jaw traction which is just a perspex mould you wear all the time over your lower teeth for six months plus. It cure the click. This was before RA.

When I was diagnosed with RA my jaw became very painful but I wasn't given anything for it and now I have a reduced mouth opening though it doesn't hurt anymore.

Hope you don't get the cold.

Please let us know how it goes and best wishes for the procedure, you could do with some relief.

No procedures, Magenta, but I've had it in my jaw for years. Very clicky, not much pain but, like Legs, very reduced opening. My dentist now pops in a plastic tube I can bite on as this means I don't have to try to keep it open as that was when it did hurt. I scare anaesthetists.

My jaw is a problem when I flare with some severity, otherwise it's fine. (I have PA and OA). As it has done this in the time before the OA discovery I blame the PA. I freely admit I am fortunate in that is in an intermittent problem. Stay cold-free magenta, please! Good luck with the injections, I hope they do something to relieve the discomfort. DD

    Hi everyone,

Didn't think there would be so many with jaw problems!

John-I've had 4yrs of going back and forth to people-so called 'experts' in maxillofacial problems and never got the help I needed until 2mths ago. I will try anything to get relief from this pain. Surgeon has told me 'if' it works it will be short lived but they'll try other things which will eventually mean surgery. I've not been given strong enough painkillers cos gp says then there's nothing left to try when it gets really bad.

Mark-I know what you mean about the pain, it's very hard to explain to someone what it's like. You can get a jaw replacement though it's very risky but there other things they can do. Can you get an NHS dentist? They could then refer you to a maxillofacial dr.

Hi Ros33! Welcome to the forum  I've had the gum shields but I personally didn't think they worked. The surgeon has told me to stop using it-if it's not working, why bother? I hope it helps you though.

DD, Sticky and Linda, thanks for your replies too. My jaw really cracks now plus I've got reduced opening. I forget sometimes and (usually when someone's looking!) I can't get my food in

I'm trying to stay germ free until the 3rd. I have to be there for 8am!

    Anyway, thanks again everyone,
    Eileen x
