having had my big toe joint removed 2 weeks ago am healing fine stitches out yesterday but I am finding I am wobbly when walking my foot feels different having the toe made shorter as the joint was removed , was wondering if this is a balance problem with having the toe now fused anyone else had this problem ??? have nearly fallen over a few time becasue of this so am getting a bit worried especially with the thought of falling on my new wrist joint and damaging it x

    Hello lavendarlady,
I believe that the big toe is used most for balance so it probably is that it will take some time to get used to it.
Is a stick not possible or would that irritate your new wrist.?
You are in the wars aren't you?
Do take it easy when walking, it would be dreadful if you fell.
    take care

I've no experience of this, Lavenderlady, but it does sound to me as if it's a balance problem which you'll soon solve once you're more used to walking with your 'new' toe. I hope so. But, if you've doubts, or are in danger of falling check it out with the experts.

    Hi Lavenderlady
Yes as daylily says your big toe is used for balance. by removing the joint I would think that it would be less flexible, so it would probably be the reason why you are feeling wobbly when you walk. if you can use a stick for a short while it may help you to feel safer untill you are used to the new toe. sending {{{{hugs}}}} and hoping you get it sorted soon.
    Stay positive always👍xx

Big toes (despite not being that big) are crucial for balance. Make sure you have a stick with you (to be usd on the opposite side), don't rush movements, concentrate when walking and I am sure you will soon learn the new balance that is required. Take care. DD

    Hello Lavenderlady

Although I have no experience of this, I have heard before that balance can be affected by toes. Hopefully things will improve once you get more used to it.

    Thinking of you.

thanks everyone my big toe no longer touches the floor its been done so as I roll my foot forward it touches the floor but when standing its higher up and no longer touches the floor which as you all say we need ourr big toes for balance,
unfortunalty like my TWR last November I am having problems with the wound healing, saw consultant again today saw him monday am on a/b's again but its not healing as quick as he would like got to go back next friday again exactly same situation I had with my wrist, he asked if my new wrist joint was removed, thinking quick I said no no it healed with the pills so hes giving me another week to see if they work, there is no
way they are taking the new joint away I think its being a type 2 diabetic that slows the healing , michelle
