tramadol

Hi,
Been taking the tramadol now for a week, i cant take nsaid's because i have kidney disease so was put on these after months of nothing.
They are good, but make you drowsy, so decided to just take at night, so at least i get a half decent sleep and dont feel as bad when i get up in the morning, this along with the steroid injections seems to keep most of the pain at bay til about lunch time.
But im going to have to pack the tramadol in. By the time the afternoon comes i am so tired, unusually tired that i almost collapse, and the last 4 days i have had to go to bed in the afternoon for 2 hours, taking my 5 year old along with me, becuase i physically cannot stay awake. I had fatigue before the injections and tramadol but nothing like this.
I feel totally bad on my son. And weighing things up, i think the pain is better than the tiredness and sleeping in the afternoon, i could sleep longer but make myself get up for my son.
Im seeing the rheumy again on monday, and im going to ask him to please let me just go back on naproxen, this was stopped after he realised i have kidney disease. But my kidney function has been fine for years now, surely if they kept an eye on it it would be ok.
Does anyone else suffer the same with tramadol?

Hi I was prescribed tramadol for pain which worked well but i found that even taking a low dose only at night i was still spaced out the next day. I think the trouble is they are very strong. Hopefully your doctor can suggest an alternative. Best wishes Josie0

Hi there Princess, I'm afraid I must be totally weird, there have been times when the pain is bad and I've taken 8 per day!!! They are great for taking the pain away but I don't feel tired or have any other symptoms. Does that make me weird or lucky? I don't know, and they certainly don't help me to sleep, unfortunately. If you are having problems go back and ask for something else, they should be able to prescribe something that doesn't make you feel like this even with your kidney problems, there's lots of options out there. Wishing you well and that you can get something sorted,
Sue x0 -
That's me & you both weird Sue, lol...
I was on the full eight a day for a while & nothing, dint even touch the pain, certainly no drowsiness but I think that's due to the fact I spent years on an extremely high dose of dihydrocodiene.
I'm now on the paracetamol, diclofenic & fentanyl patches.. It's getting there. The patches are great, I'm actually sleeping on a night, haven't done for many years. Still getting some breakthrough pain but so much better than before.
I'm not sure how you would fare with fentanyl regarding your kidneys...
I started on 25mcg/hr & now on 50's.. Put one on every three days..
Best of luck with whatever happens hun.Me-Tony

I have tramadol 50mg which I take at night as they help me drop off but I cannot take them during the day as they do make me feel very dopey. What does work for me (when things are untenable) is the slow-release 100mg tramadol, I find those very effective and non-drowsy. I ration those however, I don't want to get used to them.
Tramadol are morphine-based, morphine has a sedative-effect on some. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
I think they must work on brain cells, I don't have many of those, lol...
It got to the point I was taking 6-8 of the 30mg dihydrocodiene at a time, just shows you how dependant in them I'd become and how used to them by body had become... And then in their infinite wisdom the docs stopped them just like that & swapped me to the tramadol.. Lol
Not a smart move..
Haha
Hey, maybe that's why I'm so daft... It's the drug abuse  :shock:Me-Tony

Well I have to admit I am on tramadol, and yes it takes away some of the pain, it def does make me drowsy and I take 2 x 50 each time. But then I have always been very tolerant of pain killers.

Well I'm supposed to take 1 x 50 3 times a day.....havent taken any yet today.
I think tomorrow might be better if I am going to start them.....I've got an earlyish starrt tomorrow...have to be out of the house at 9am and have a 44 mile return journey......in theory I should have another 44miles in the evening????44 miles or possibly 88 miles driving.....doubt that I'll take any tonight LOL

hope are ok for you.
My body just isnt used to taking painkillers, so maybe thats why they had such an effect on me.
Hope there is something else they can give me on monday. Damn my kidneys so much its their fault i cant take the ones that seem to fit me well.0 -
Good Luck for Monday......hope they get you sorted out.

Like Dream Daisy I am supposed to take slow release Tramadol, for when things are bad, but for me they do little, even combined with paracetamol. Apparently my late father was practically immune to anything morphine based too....
My husband has a bad back and on the odd occasion when he has had to take Tramadol, he is totally spaced out, can barely put a sensible sentence together is very drowsy and is fit for nothing! For this reason, he only takes them when he really is suffering, as no way could he drive to work when on them. He can't believe they have no, or little effect on me.
I think what I'm trying to say, is that different pain meds work differently on each individual.
You must tell your doctor how you are feeling, and surely there can be an alternative to help you. Good luck. x0 -
I have taken tramadol when I've had very bad flares but I don't like taking them because of the side effects. I have 3 young children and I they make me feel so spaced out and drowsy that I can't function properly.
Please talk to your doctor before you stop taking them as you may need to reduce the dose slowly rather than just stop. Whenever I have stopped taking them I have been very ill with chills, fever, insomnia and other nasty symptoms which last for a week or two. These are all symptoms of tramadol withdrawal, it's happened every time I've stopped taking tramadol and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I'm sworn off them now and I'd rather suffer the pain than go through that again.

Hi, im currently prescribed Tramadol, and Naproxen, i cant take them if im working so usually wait till im in such severe pain i cant function,, i took 1 Naproxen 500mg last night at 9 pm an 1 tramadol 50mg, by 10.30 i was away with the fairies, couldnt sleep, had jerky legs, and arms, and hot sweats,, so got to sleep at around 2 am,, grrr,, i woke up this morning at 8am and never felt so ill ,, been sick 3 times, cant eat breakfast, and feel so drowsy and tired, i had to take them because when i came home from work i was in so much pain, im fed up as i either suffer with the pain or suffer next days reaction to the meds. I dont take them daily as i would never be able to function, i have tried codeine, and the other usual tablets, even tried Kapake, these work with the pain brilliantly. but the side affects are just horrendous, i have made an appointment to see Doctor to try yet another type of pill,,
I have arthritis in my Neck, hips, Knees, and ankles, its getting were i now sometomes have to take time of work, like today, im suppose to be working at 4pm.. Dont think im going to make it, x0 -
I know that we are all different has we have all said on many an occasion, but I've gotta say the fentanyl patches are doing a great job of helping me with sleeping on a night. I've had no ill side effects from them at all. I'm still struggling with a fair bit of breakthrough pain during the day. I'm taking the full whack paracetamol and diclofenic slow release, one at morning, one at night. Need to figure out something to add to it when I need to.
Anyway.. Best of luck to all above with the pain relief/lack of.

Hi
I was given tramadol for a back injury a while ago, but it was awful, made me really sick - took me a few days to register that was the problem, and then coming off them made me even more sick! Well, I guess that's one way to lose half a stone in a week...
I really didn't get on with them, felt awfully spaced out, sick, and it didn't seem to do much for the pain either!
But, like we all say, each to their own and what works for one might not for another!0 -
hey Hileena
I am also on tramadol and have been for a year. I did at the beginning feel very sick all the time and drowsy but I did become used to it. Good luck but don't suffer too long as for some else. Good luck and hope things get better soonxxx
Sue I also take 8 tramadol a day and at the moment it is not touching the pain (it did in the beginning) I don't know if I have just become tollerant to it now as i don't feel drowsy or out of it like i did in the beginning. My consultant already thinks the pain killers I'm on are far too strong and I'm taking too many so goodness knows what she'll say when I ask for something stronger!! Hope you are well at the moment.

Hi an update, i asked the rheumy for the naproxen, virtually begged and pointed out my kidney function is now good.
He put things into perspective for me with his answer he said, your kidney function is fine at the moment but it has taken alot of tablets to get it to that, he looked at my notes and said if i went on the naproxen i would be looking at going on dialysis in about 10 years.
So have accepted that i wont be able to take them.0 -
Hi..
I take 8 tramadol most days..
I did find when i first took them though that i was very dazed, zombified and generally not with it.. after about 3 weeks i felt better now i ok on them..
Worth mentioning to doc on monday..
Let us know how you get ...xxTracyxx0 -
Hi Ross
Thanks for the advice.....I'm seeing my ortho on Friday about my previous hip replacement so we'll see what he says.....if he says take them I will.
It was my GP that gave them to me and he is one of these that scribbles a prescription just to get rid of you :x
