You were lucky the cat was ok.
I have owned cats all my life and I know how dumb they can be. I bet it was a Tom they seem to be excelent at getting into trouble.
We had one when we lived in London, it was a victorian house and he managed to get in the cellar and under the sitting room floor. The first we knew was a sorry mewing. We put food by the way he got in but in the end we had to rip up the floor boards to rescue him.
