I had a call yesterday from the nurse at my Gp practice, my vitamin d levels are very low so I have to take vitamin d tablets and calcium on top of all my other drugs.

She advised me that I should go out in the sun for 20 mins per day and got very confused when I burst out laughing, I explained that I have very pale irish skin and am VERY sensitive to the sun (I get sunblock on prescription) and even if I wasnt I still could not sunbathe because of the methotrexate.

She also wanted me to collect a script for a vit d injection, which was fine but there is a countrywide shortage of the injections and after phoning 4 chemists I finally found one, so if anyone is looking thre is one in South Harrow with stock

Vit D is essential for us arthritics, we appear to not get enough via diet, let's face it decent sunshine is a rarity and for some of us the sun is a mortal enemy anyway! Get the 20 minutes a day if you can, I try to but I do so either quite early in the morning or later on in the afternoon - smothered in sunscreen of course. I too take calcium (when I remember  ) but don't regard that (or the rose hip, why do I bother with that now? ) as meds, they are supplements, a different beast altogether! I wish you well and I hope the jab helps. DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

Yep, I have Vit D defficiency also.

Doc gave me vit D and calcium chewable tablets however my chiropractor and my nutritionist said they viewed them as useless and advised me to take it in liquid form.

So, I now take a 'natural' liquid vit d and calcium one which doesn't have all the horrid things in it as one of my books on autoimmune systems said the same.

Hmm, I may have to look at that also, I have always wondered if it's absorbed easier.

Along with other vitamins etc I buy Vit D, and also have Calcichew. Apparent to my rheumy my calcium levels are very low and she wanted to give me Calcichew but I said I was already on them, so I also take extra calcium & magnesium tablets.

I'm at higher than normal risk of developing bone problems due to being on the contraceptive injection so I'd rather spend extra to hopefully help myself better for the future.

Where do you get your liquid versions from?

Hi, I take cod liver oil tabs, as I can't bare even the smell of fish. I wish I could eat it, but its one of those things. I think you should get some benefit from the sun even if you sit in the shade with sun block on. I don't know if you could manage that if your skin is so pale. Love Sue

We've mere have the same condition before. The things that helps me to survive on having lack of Vitamin D on my body are Proper Diet (as much as possible two foods with rich on Vitamin D is okay for a single day), Right Exercise (much better the slowly exercise under the sun). And lastly, take a Natural Supplement. In my case, my doctor prescribed me the MX Vitamin D. This supplements really helps a lot.
