Just watched the whole of the drama of Ernest Shackleton and his ill fatted voyage to the Antarctic staring Kenneth Branagh on Yesterday TV, the man was such an inspiration to do what he did and to survive with all his crew was a fine tribute to him and them, those men suffered terrible cold but still managed to pull off the imposible, sadly some of those who survived went to their deaths in the trenches of the first world war, back home our Government never sent a ship to look for him but set up a committee to “look into the issue”, now doesn’t that sound familiar of the politicians of today?.
We have lost that spirit of leading from the front and fair play. I wish I could have met him he’s a true hero as was all his crew.

    Hi Mell

Last year I went to a wonderful exhibition about Shackleton at the Maritime Museum, Liverpool. On display were lots of the photographs taken by the official photographer, Frank Hurley,on the ill-fated expedition of the Endurance. It's amazing that these photos, taken on glass plates, have survived, and they are a very moving record of the events which took place. Those men really were heroes, and their courage is truly inspirational. It was sad that after that amazing rescue, Shackleton later died of a heart attack when he was only 47.

The exhibition at Liverpool has finished now, but you can still see some of it on this link.
