today went to hospital to check my toe wound was healing after having it joint replaced may 18th been on anti biotics since but today i thought he was going to say yes getting better keep taking the pills but no such luck he wanted me to stay in to have anti biotics on iv , but said no I want to give a it a day or so as i thought it was doing great and do not want another hospital stay, so I am booked in for monday for could be 3 to 5 days ( I'm planning a day ) so have got from today to monday morning to finish the pills and rest my foot completly so hopefully can come home same day, he did say I might need the metal removed and I could end up with serious complecations I said my wrist took ages to heal but the pills finally sorted it out within 10 weeks , has anyone else had this problem with infections taking ages to heal, I am diabetic but my sugar levels are doing great ??????? I am seriously thinking of forgetting any more ops, what do I do ??????

Oh dear, lavenderlady, I am not surprised you have had enough. I don't know much about the implications of diabetes on operations and their recovery, but given everything else that has been going on with you I am not the least surprised that you are feeling so low. No wise words, no comfort to offer as such, but brace yourself: ((())) These are indeed tough times for you, but I have little doubt that you will find the resources to get through them. I wish you well. DD

    Hi lavenderlady
Have asked my OH (who has been an insulin dependant diabetic for 30 years) whether she was aware that healing took longer for diabetics. She said this was supposed to be the case possibly due to impaired circulation as a possible result of poor control.

    Hi lavenderlady
Im so sorry to hear this, none like to go in hospital, especially when you have been in already to have your op.
I have everything crossed that the infection clears up for you before then.
But please dont let it get any worse, I had intravenous ABs a couple of years ago for an infection in the ankle, and they said then that I should have come in earlier.
    You take care.
    Love

I can well understand you being sofed up. If it's any help, I had an infection after my op and they put me on intravenous for the antibiotics, it starts working very quickly that way, you would be better of having that. I was in hospital for only 1 or coming on for two days I think. But they do clear the infection up a lot lot quicker than the tablets.

Let us know how it goes. I'm sure you will be a lot happier after having it done.

thankyou everyone, I do feel a fraud by taking a hospital bed though, am getting aabout 3 books ready to take just in case it takes a long time Karen did you have to stay in hospital for your IV long ?? you would think in this day and age you could go in as a day patient, if this does not work the plate and screws will have to come out which I am dreading has anyone had their joints etc removed due to infection etc ???
oh found out Thursday mum has alzheimers her brain scan she did not have vascular, so its been a pretty nasty week

Surely the longer-lasting the infection so the longer the required treatment to knock it on the head. You are not a fraud for taking up a bed, you are a poorly person who needs mending. I am sorry to read that about your mum, that must be a frightful worry for you and is another reason for getting this infection sorted, so get thee not to a nunnery but to hospital and let's hope it all works and you will be home sooner rather than later. I wish you well. DD

No not unless its necessary.....so I said...if its not broke....dont fix it"!!!!!!and thats the only edperience of metal that I have sorry.

well had my 3 days stay in hospital IVs at 6am 12pm 6pm and 10pm they only took about 25 minutes to drip down, it was so boring managed to read Sally Morgans book in one day , because I was walking wounded lol i could go down the duck pond (In the hospital grounds) shop etc, but I just rested, I had 5 others all elderly ladies one cracked her hip another knee problems but one old lady told the nurse her leg hurt and the nurse said Flo you've had an operation her reply was so funny she said have I duck just how my nan used to say it bless her she was away with the fairies but so sweet,
anyway got let our wednesday with 2 lots of AB's saw him again this morning and he tried to see if the bone had fused which it had'nt so got to leave it in still and for good i hope on more AB's and got to rest it blood test Thursday and see him again Friday, I certainly am not having the other one done for a long time despite it playing me up today, its healing up but not 100% yet still got a small hole just as i did with my wrist, maybe I'm just rubbish at healing up due to my diabetes, off to rest thankyou for all your nice words and advice , michelle

Not surprised you are fed up. Better to have put up with the boredom though and have the IV antibiotics than risk the infection getting worse. Hope you start to heal soon, I suppose all you can do is eat healthily (which you have to anyway with diabetes,) rest plenty and get lots of sleep.

I do hope things start to go a little more smoothly for you now with the antibiotics doing their stuff. It's been a long trek, hasn't it, Lavenderlady? Please keep us posted.

    oh dear lavenderlady

I am pleased for you that you are back home and I will keep my fingers crossed that the iv antibiotics have started to work with the help of the extra ones you brought home.
Good luck on friday, hope your doctor is pleased this time.
    And....did you enjoy your book?

    Take care

Hi, Sorry to hear that things are getting you down but, I can understand why, not many people enjoy hospital! In fact, I'm terrible when I've had to stay in!
Being diabetic it is important to make sure you are healing properly, my husband is a diabetic and it does take a little bit longer to heal, diabetic people tend not to feel wounds as much as non diabetics, which can lead to you thinking your fine, but you still have a nasty infection brewing up and that might mean much more hospital treatment than a few days on anti biotics!

Sorry, I'm sounding really bossy, and that's not good. All I really mean is that the hospital are suggesting what they think is the quickest and best way to heal the infection. I hope you soon feel a lot better and get home and back to normal!
Good luck and lots of get well quickly wishes, love Sue xxxxx(((()))

well on more a/b's 10 a day if i keep my foot up it looks fine but as soon as I put my foot down it goes a redish colour still got a small wound with scab that is taking its time to heal same as happeend with my twr last November, but its not healing as it should do by now I had the op on 18th May it took early nov to end of jan for the a/b's to heal my wrist, also have my podiatrist appointment wednesday see what they say, also got my dr on thursday ( our 32nd wedding annivesary) see what he has to say as well, the funny thing is my right toe is killing me lately yet the one that had the op is fine as far as pain is concerned, damn artheritis, thanks for your good thoughts, its so nice to know others know what I'm feeling :)
