I think if she had a cold, kmr, it'd probably have shown by now but I can well understand your concern. I hope all goes well for you both.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi Kmr,
I started enbrel for the first time last week, so far so good I really hope it's successful for your daughter and me ofcourse
About the risk of getting ill, ofcourse you are more at risk of catching something with a lowered immune but, if you use the medicated hand washes, avoid people who you know are ill and generally be sensible I think your daughter will be ok. And even if she does catch something, if you alert the GP and the Rheumy if need be, she can be put on anti biotics and taken off methotrexate (if she is on it) as a precaution.
I'm sending love and hugs for you and your daughter and I really hope the Enbrel is a huge success.
All the best xxx'grá agus solas'

Hi kmr
I am not surprised you are worried, it is your daughter and mums worry about their children. I will be thinking about you both at 4 pm. A hug to you both (((())))

Hi KMR. This is an important day for you both. I am really hoping the Enbrel works but it might take some time to get into the system and for her to feel any benefit. She will be well monitored and if she feels run down (hard to tell when we have spent so many months feeling awful anyway) or catches a cold she will able to inform her rheumy Nurse and they will advise her whether to stop with the meds or not. I never seemed to catch anything for the first 2 years but now I do all the time!
Best of luck

I am sure that all will be well, it won't work instantaneously (none of these drugs do, more's the pity!) but I hope it turns out to be the one for her and that it really helps. Follow the good advice about hand gels etc, they do help to keep one infection-free. I wish you both well. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

thankyou you are all so wonderfull, she had her injection last night and felt a little dizzy and faint afterwards but she thinks it was due to her getting wound up about taking the medication for the first time, she is fine today, i really do hope it helps her live a full life and do all the things she wants to do with her horse (she has been unable to ride for over a year) ahe has just sarted to compete again but i have to cold hose her wrists as they swell so much ( should be the horse we hose lol) again thank you so much and i wish you all well :P0
-
I'm glad it wasn't too traumatic, kmr, and I do hope it works. As for the riding - would different reins help eg ladder reins? I used to ride with RDA and had my own, very cheaply customised set. If you have an RDA group near to you they might be able to advise. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

well my daughter started embrel and has just had her 3rd injection , her wrist which has been constantly swollen has now reduced and she said she feels better, but she has now started with mild back pain and also pains in her legs the nurse has said to monitor it but if it gets worse then to ring hospital, as anyone else had any simular symptems when taking embrel ? xx0

WELL THE EMBREL SEEMED TO WORK TOOK SWELLING DOWN, MY DAUGHTER COULD EVEN KNEEL ON THE FLOOR WHICH SHE HASNT BEEN ABLE TO DO, SHE DID FEEL A LITTLE UNWELL WHILE TAKING IT AND HAD BAD REACTION ON THE NEEDLE SITE WHERE SHE INJECTED, SO THE CONSULTANT ADVISED SHE NEEDED TO STOP TAKING IT STRAIGHT AWAY  THE NURSES ARE NOW COMING OUT AND SHE STARTS A NEW DRUG TOMMOROW IT BEGINS WITH A C (CANT REMEMBER) WILL HAVE A LOOK TONITE IT IS THE SAME TYPE OF DRUG THO SO IN SOME WAYS WE ARE BACK TO SQUARE ONE BUT SHE STILL FEELS A LOT BETTER SO FINGERS CROSSED THERE WILL BE NO REACTION TO THIS ONE, IF THERE IS THE NEXT OPTION IS TO GO IN HOSPITAL FOR THE DAY AND HAVE TO GO ON SOME TYPE OF DRIP

Hi,
Sorry to hear your child has this awful thing and sorry had a reaction to Enbrel. I am on Enbrel (43) started taking it in November and it's fantastic on my back and hips but not on other joints which is now being addressed. For me it really is an incredible medication my pain score went down from 90+ to 0.5 in three months, I teach in a secondary school so always worried about catching something but honestly apart from one chest infection in December I have been very well. I have had to teach kids who have had chickenpox in the family, we had a huge outbreak of whooping cough recently as well, you wouldn't be normal if you weren't worried about any of the medication that just shows you are a loving, caring mum.
The new medication will be prob be certolizumab which is still an anti TNF so should still have the same effect. I really hope it gives the help you are looking for if you need a chat or anything let me know. Xxxx
P.S just a tip before and after the injection get an ice pack and leave on for few minutes makes a massive difference. XAS Sufferer

Hello KMR
Really hope the new drug is better for your daughter. Might be worth asking the nurse or rheumatology nurse about the use of anti-histamines to deal with injection site reactions. They are, apparently very common and I know when I used to inject Humira I had huge reactions at the injection site (eg covering much of my thigh when injected there). Eventually it was suggested that I took an over the counter anti-histamine about an hour before the injection and for a couple of days afterwards if needed and it made the world of difference. As for the drip option if this drug doesn't work - there are a few of the anti-tnfs/biologics which are administered via a drip so it is not something to be concerned about if your daughter does need to change drugs again - it's just a different way of having the drug.
Really hope it goes well for her.
Love Tilly xxx0 -
Thanks for the tip on the ice pack will tell her to try that, she did take anti histamines, but the consultant said the reaction was bad and it meant she was'nt getting the full dose?, as i said she is feeling a lot better which is GREAT to see so hopefully there will be no rections to this new one and she will continue to improve, THANKS again for your wonderfull comments it really does help to know i have friends on here to talk to0

Oh what a disappointment, kmr, your poor girl. There are powerful drugs, I sincerely hope the next one is better for her all round. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0
