Hi all,
Just wanted to let you all know that this morning I got a letter from the DWP to say I had been awarded the higher rate of mobility

but

I have only been awarded Higher rate mobility till 30th March 2012...
and I have not been awarded anything for the care part of the award. Which is why I think it was only a partial victory....

does anyone know about mobility? I had planned to get a car as my car is inadiquate for me, its too low to the floor and small, DWP sent me some information about getting a car, but I thought the award had to last for a minimum of three years? can anyone give me some advice?

thanks

Mark

It's a long time since I had a Motability car, Mark, but certainly then you had to have the Higher Rate for 3 years at least because 3 years was the minimum lease period. If you check the Motability website they may have more up-to-date info.

I don't know about the time aspect of DLA and motability, have a look on their website. It's a route I have never gone down as I don't drive far enough in a year to warrant the expense of it. I am glad to hear you have been awarded the Higher Rate, even if it is for a short time but at least you have a foot in the door so to speak, it may bode well for a further award as and when. Well done to you lorica, I am pleased for you. DD

    Hi,

Congratulations on getting the DLA even if it feels like a small victory.

I get High Rate DLA and have not taken up the option of a car as its like a higher purchase, so many is taken away from the DLA. My daughter like you was awarded it temporarily and did take up the option of a car, hence why I know money is deducted.

Have you enquired with Motability about perhaps adapting your own car so that you won't have constant money deducted from your DLA???? Just a thought.

    Good luck.............xxxxx

I think you have to have at least 12 months award to have the choice of a motability car. You then exchange your 4 weekly payments for a brand new car. taxed and insured for you. If you rely on a car it is nice to have a new, reliable vehicle.
I am glad you got the higher rate of mobility but saddened you didn't get any care as difficulties with mobility usually go hand-in-hand with difficulties washing, dressing, getting in and out of bed safely etc,

Did you get it backdated in the end?

    Lorica,

Sorry hun, Im not quite understanding. Are you saying that they won't give you a blue badge because of motability???? People have a blue badge and don't even drive, other people drive them around ie., son-in-law drives his mother around who has a blue badge.

As soon as my daughter was awarded High Rate Mobility, she got a car on motability prior to passing her driving test. Unfortunately her award was downgraded later and car went back so did her blue badge as she now gets low rate.

I so hope you are awarded High Rate Mobility because you can automatically get the BLUE BADGE. Also if you do not take up the Motability, ring DLA and ask for ROAD TAX EXEMPTION. You will get 1 years road tax and any tax you have paid on your car will be refunded.

    Hope that helps hun xxxxxxxxx

So you cannot have a blue badge with a mobility DLA award of less than a year? and you were refused DLA at first partly because you didn't have a blue badge? I AM confused!

    hi Eve, Elizabeth,

They are saying because I have not got a full year left on my high rate mobility award I cannot get one automatically. My award is for one year back dated to March, i have only just got my letter, so there isn't one full year left so I cannot get one. I can appeal the time span but they would look at the whole award, and i would risk the chance of loosing the award.

    Elizabeth no your not confused

If you don't get one automatically does that mean you can still apply for a blue badge? They will then just look at your request for a blue badge and decide if you are entitled to it. Surely this wouldn't effect your DLA award as they are separate issues? Best not appeal the DLA unless you want to challenge not getting any award for care.

    Lorica,

Hun its not DLA that award you the Blue Badge is the council which you probably already know that. I applied for my Blue Badge by calling the council. Another form to fill in and cos at the time I didn't have a supportive GP, I sent in hospital letters. Are the council refusing you?????

In fact, I got my blue badge from the council even before my high rate award. As far as I was aware, you don't necessarily have to have high rate DLA to get a blue badge, it's about your condition and mobility.

High rate means automatically but does not mean you can't apply. Here is the tel. no for Disability Law Service 0207 791 9800 www.dls.org.uk
They may be able to assist you with this and or guide you.

    Good luck hun xxxxx
