Hello folks, have posted this same query in Chit Chat and been advised to post here instead. Do hope someone has experience of this problem.
Hi,
I've just started using a scooter every day and don't know where to turn for impartial insurance advice. Bought Scooter new a few months ago; cost just £500 on the internet. Can't afford a heavy insurance premium but I think I should have some protection in case airline damages or loses it.
Any advice will be very welcome. many thx
Dan

Hi,
Not sure about that because I think its so expensive to take it on holiday i havent got as far as thinking that.....Where are you going?
Would it be any easier and less worry to hire one when you get there?

Hi Hileena,
I'm travelling within Europe. European Law rules that airlines must carry disability aids free of charge for passengers but most airlines seem to have conditions. In the case of Easyjet scooters must weigh less than 60kg, excluding the battery. My scooter is the portable type and weighs just 40 kgs.
I've only just discovered this info myself and was quite surprised to learn that I can bring it with me, free of charge.
However, it's vital to check the terms and conditions of every airline BEFORE BOOKING and get written consent prior to booking, by email, if wished. It is the sole responsibility of the passenger to read and accept the terms of carriage.
For world wide travel, both Virgin and BA will transport scooters but I haven't looked at their terms.
So, anyone know anything about insuring my scooter?

now that's clever!! it's something I've never thought about. Thx for the lead, valval
I did have 3 mths free UK insurance when I first bought it but I declined a permanent policy. Will suss out holiday insurance to see what that'll cost.

I use Fish Insurance-they are a disability specialist company. I insure my powerchair each year, and it costs around £70, and covers accidents and liability (incase I damage a parked car or knock someone over), as well as covering recovery etc. They also do holiday insurance, which is good to have if you are going abroad and you have a medical condition. Their premiums are higher, but at least you know you are covered! Their website is here:http://www.fishinsurance.co.uk/index.php
I have only ever taken my manual chair on a plane, but I've found that on the whole they are very careful with it. I don't reccommend Ryan Air though:they took one look at me in my chair, and said I couldn't go, even though we had warned them in advance. Luckily my brother in law is quite forceful, and they relented.
