hello everyone its been a little while since i've been on here, hope you're all well. I'm just a bit worried atm, my hair seems to be falling out a lot recently, i mean i still have a lot of it so no one is noticing but me, but its still bothering me and im worried it might get worse. Every morning i wake up and find between 15 and 20 hairs on my pillows, when i wash my hair i seem to be getting the same amount out, no matter how gently i wash, and when brushing my hair also. I know that it can be a side effect of methotrexate but having been on that for over a year and this only starting recently, i'm more inclined to think it might have something to do with the new anti TNF injections ive recently started, cimzia. Left my rhumy a message and waiting to hear back from her. Just wondering if anyone else has experiend it, or basically just needing someone to put my mind at ease and tell me i'm not about to go bauld over night :D

    Hi Lisaa,

I didn't want to start MTX because of the possibility of losing my hair. But I have been okay so far. Some hair loss is natural but if it continues to concern you and you notice thin patches then you might be advised to lower ,or stop, the amounts of meds. Folic acid helps with these side effects too. You have let them know and that is the best course of action.

Lisaa, I took MTX for about 18 months before i started to get a bit more hair loss than usual like you no-one else noticed not even my hairdresser when i asked him, i had my folic acid upped and then also went onto injected meth which has helped i still loose hair when i brush it (find some on my shoulders) but i don't know now whether that was normal before or not i must say that i still have loads of hair and that was 2 years ago so it is either not falling out as much as i think or it is growing back really well.
What i can't work out is what is a normal amount of hair loss? it this normal for us or for everyone else or not...

I hope you get some answers from you rheumy nurse

    Hi Lisa,

Nice to see you back but wish things were a little more settled for you.

I am also lossing hair and have been for a long time but still not bald. Its thinner for sure but you might be able to get something to hep once they get back to you.

Mine is from the mtx and they said t take 10ml of folic acid to me daily.... it might have helped but the washing bit it really comes out as it doesn't with combing etc.

Not bald though I promise you.

Hope they gt back to you soon. Cris x

Thanks for the advice everyone, its always nice to know you're not going through things alone :)

I am on quite a high dose of methotrexate, 25mg a week and the 5mg of folic acid the next day. Madwestie, it's interesting to hear that it took 18months before you started getting hair loss, i thought if it was going to happen it would have from the get go, but obviously it can strike at any time. Oh well i guess its just one of these things.

I'm off to lanzarote tomorrow so im sure being away from it all will help me get my mind off of worrying, you guys have certinally helped put my mind at ease. I'll let you know what the rhumy says once i'm back :) x

Could you take Kelp to help with the hair loss, its natural too. Sounds like its the meds that are the culprit and probably stress too.. xx
