Had two injections in my left foot on tuesday and as they will be in the joint had to have them done in theatre where it is sterile due to possible infection. Have had this done twice before, its not very pleasant but worth it for a few months at least. The previous times I was shown to a bed and given a gown to change into behind the curtain, then wait for theatre staff to collect me and was always brought back on a chair and given a lovely cup of tea, then allowed home.
This time was sent to the day/waiting room along with 3 other ladies. A nurse came and took my blood pressure and gave me a gown and showed me to the toilet to get changed and was then told to sit back in the room, two of the ladies had their husbands with them, which made it embarrasing sitting in my dressing gown. The doctor then came and took me to an office to tell me where he is going to inject. I had to carry my bag with my clothes and personel things in with me as did'nt like to leave them behind. I asked a nurse why we had to sit in the day room and she just said "oh were very busy today". I was then called to theatre, was told my bag was safe to leave there. ( had no choice really) After my injections was told to walk back not be took in a chair, my foot was sore and I felt a little light headed but still had to walk. Was given a cup of tea then told to get changed and go home. Surely if I had to go to theatre for the injection so as not get any infection then why did i get changed in the toilet where their may be any amount of germs breeding. Is this the norm any where else or a one off? should I put in a complaint to the hospital? I don't want to sound like a trouble maker though. It wasn't a pleasant experiance at all. I know I didn't need a bed but the privacy of a curtain and a comfy chair would have made my short stay a litle easier. Jackie

    Hi Jackie

It doesnt sound very hygenic to me, escpecially changing in the toilet. I also would not feel comfortable sitting in a waiting/day room with others and their partners. Being busy is not much of an expanation for all the things you experienced and you should put in a complaint and also some suggestions on how to make the patient feel more comfortable.

When I had my caudal epidural I had a similar experience although the changing rooms were clean and there was a toilet to one side. I had to wait in a day room until my procedure but I was put on a bed and into the recovery room after the injection.

I think the hospitals are trying to deal with too many people and are having to use these sort of measures. Unfortunately I do not think that you were treated correctly and it is important to raise your concerns.

Thanks everyone, I think I will put my concerns in writing to the hospital, you never know next time it might be differant.
I feel like I'm always complaining about something these days! oh well it takes my mind off the pain and gives me something to do.

    Hi Jackie,

Not ideal but it happens this way at times. They do use iodine and stuff when they do the jabs so that bit was sterile no matter where you changed but its still not the bast way to do it is it?

It happens here when they are busy..... I never really thought about it but not i do....

Hope the jabs work though flower. Cris x

    Hi Jackie

I tend to think its part of the norm. If you are on a ward, you would probably get changed into your gown at your bedside where as we all know were there all sorts of germs, hospitals are breeding grounds for them!

However from a dignity aspect, getting changed in a toilet is not nice is it? They need to provide proper changing room facilities, perhaps a letter to highlight this would be good.
