HSBC Key fobs

Morning all,

Not sure if anyone else banks with HSBC, but have you received your new key fob to log in to online banking? I won't start on my rant and about its impracticalities of having to lug it around. I just find it so hard to hold down the buttons properly, has anyone spoke to them about it yet? There is plenty of support for the visually impaired who would struggle to read the numbers, but what about us feeble ones who can't even input the numbers!

Afternoon Flowerpot (I do love your username by the way! ). Funny you should mention these key fobs cos my friend's husband was telling me about them yesterday and he showed me what it was like. I can quite see why they would be difficult to use and I really do think it is something which needs to be fed back to HSBC - and if you do, I wouldn't mind betting that you won't be the first - or the last - to do so.
I would be interested to know what they say....

    Hi Flowerpot

Just googled it to take a peek and it does look a fiddly little thing. Seems other parts of the world have had them for a few years now, but l wouldnt fancy one myself. You going to complain??

    Love

I have dropped them a note to see what my options are, as there will be so many people who use a computer without being fully dexterous and if they say "get someone else to key in your pin" I will just laugh!

I have had similar devices before for work, but one I didn't have to put a pin in to it to generate a code, it just gave you the code, and my current one is software installed on my blackberry which at least has proper keys.

    Hi,
I've just activated mine and I found it very hard to apply enough force to press the keys hard enough. I've just phoned HSBC and they are sending me out a larger keypad to try. The first woman I spoke to commented that they did consult on it and can't accommodate everyone :green she passed me on to the manager who was better. Whilst she was very helpful, I did express my disappointment that such a major company had not given it more consideration, design-wise. They did say I was only the second person to contact them with issues, but acknowledged that some people won't contact them - so let them know! Will let you know when the new one arrives.
    Best wishes,
    Josie

oooh well progress of sorts. My issue isn't the size of button, but the style, there's just no spring to them. Hopefully the larger sized one has nicer buttons, and isn't so large it becomes impractical to carry about with you. I shall see what they say about mine!

I told them that - their argument was that they needed to be firm if people were carrying them around in their pockets so they wouldn't key numbers in accidentally!! Huh!! We'll see what happens!

Oh don't they just make you mad, its got a feature on it that knows when a key has been pressed too long, and as for locking it out, what are the chances of you accidently managing to hold down that stupid green button for ages, then 4 numbers, and then the green button again?!? I hope they realise they may loose a lot of customers over this, as those who most need internet banking are those who can't easily get to the high street, a large proportion of those won't be able to use this stupid thing!

Rant over, feel the need for a cup of tea now.

Barclays use a pin calculator dont know if its the same thing but I find that easy enough as the pads are touch sensitive. I have a problem with chip and pin consoles at supermarkets. You know the ones that are worn down and you have to press and hold to get the number to register. I always struggle to get the number to go in enough and my fingers dont always get the signal from the brain properly and then its obvious what my pin is as Im having to slowly and definately press each button.

I got a letter from Hsbc today telling me that due to exceptionally high demand for the larger keypads it will be october before they can send one and they request i continue to use my current one until then! Grrrr!

The keypad drives me mad. I regularly check my bank account on my laptop to see if I may have magically had £1 million deposited into my account. (I'm still waiting.......!) I always leave it upstairs in a safe place and my laptop is downstairs. I find the stairs really hard and I've not been keeping an eye on my pennies as much as I was. I know it's not entirely related and yes, I s'pose I could keep it downstairs but it's such a hassle. It was much easier without the blasted thing!

I know how you feel Starburst, I quite often will be sat somewhere with my laptop and think, ooh I will just check my bank balance. Oh no, I need that stupid fob, I can't be bothered to go and get it so don't check my bank.

I find it difficult esp with arthritic finger & longer finger nail and I have to press hard for the pin to register. I am going to ask for a bigger one as sometimes the pin does not register and do not want to get lock out. Does anybody know with the bigger key whether you will need to activate and register all over again. Thanks

    Hi,
Just an update; I've finally received my large secure key (and a h-uge bunch of flowers after I lodged a formal complaint!) and it is far easier to use, so I would recommend getting one. It isn't portable like the other, mind you, not unless you want to carry around an extremely large calculator, but never mind!
    Best wishes,
    Josie
