Has anyone tried Meptazinol for pain relief?

Hi,
Been really struggling with pain lately, which for me usually calls for Tramadol. But I've been experiencing worsening side effects, the worst being unbearable itching and sensitive dry skin. So bad the last few days that I literally couldn't stand to have any clothes on!! I've been lounging round with just a sheet draped over (my own toga party! )

So went to the GP for more meds and mentioned how I wasn't getting on with Tramadol anymore but that it's the only med that helps the pain on these bad days. Even then it's not until I've taken about my third dose that some relief kicks in. He believes that I've developed an intolerance to it and has instead prescribed Meptazinol (200mg, one taken every 4 hrs).

So far, I haven't felt anything from taking it, neither good or bad and starting to wonder if I have been given a placebo?!! I haven't found much on the web about it, what have your experiences been with it? Or can anyone recommend something else as an alternative to Tramadol but along the same sort of strength?

The pain is starting to eat me up and I find myself holding in tears and begging God for just a half hour free. I've tried every other alternative (heat, cold, TENS, distraction, bath, relaxation). AAAARRRGGGHH. I hate these days.
Any advice, gratefully received.
Thanks, Nicky

I have never heard of it, sorry. One of the hardest aspects of this malarkey is dealing with the grinding and unrelenting pain. After 15 years I am used to it and get through the day with just four cocos (30/500 strength), I only resort to trammies when things are really rough (they give me nasty dreams). Quite a few people on here are on pain patches: I know nothing about them but they seem to be very effective. It may be worth asking your GP about them. I wish you well. DD

    Hi Nicky

l hadn't heard of it either and you know l really woudl go back to teh docs if it's not working for you there ARE alternatives out there

You can't go on suffering like this and tell him you have even wondered if you have been given a placebo! I would.

Quick google suggests that it exists as a medication, but it might not be the one for you maybe???

    Love

    Toni xx

Thanks for the support. Cried myself to sleep again last night with the pain. Phoned docs first thing for an appointment and nothing free until Wednesday. This made me burst into tears again and so I have got an emergency phone call for the Doc this morning. Hopefully there will be some relief before the day ends!

l hadn't heard of it. My suggestion would be the one that my uncle using right now. The High Potency Joint Supp. Heard that before? I know it's an arthritis & joint supplement that offers quick & effective relief from arthritis pain. I'm not too aware about the other benefits or the things that this supp. can do. I think this is a good alternative from Tramadol.

I think rosechixx is trying to flog summat: those of us who actually HAVE this dross know that supplements do phack all apart from making those who flog 'em rich. How did you get on, kickyloo? I've been thinking about you as I know what that kinda pain is like. DD

    Hi Nicki,

    Good to see you!

I haven't heard of them either but would say the patches... they are based on the premises you haven't reacted to trams in some of their cases so be a bit careful with those.

There are so many pain relief things and routines and flower your gp needs to change yours and try something else. With luck they will find something that does help and you will get much less pain.

I know that pain control is only to get it to a manageable level but thats worth a lot.

You tried the relaxation, self help stuff I guess? It might help while you wait to be seen again but |I would get an appointment asap and tell them they are not helping.

In the mean time rest up, try and find a comfortable position and hang in there. Cris x
