    Hi Magenta

I have been seeing my orthopaedic consultant for years and usually we discuss how I am feeling, how much pain and where etc. I usually then go for xrays and then go back to consulting room for examination and to discuss everything. It would be a good idea for you to keep a diary of your pain, how things are affecting you etc as its hard to remember everything when you get to the appointment. I also write a list of any questions I have and I always take someone with me for company and I find they can remember the stuff that I forget. Good luck with the appointment, I hope it goes well xx

Weejean is spot on, it's much like seeing any other new doc. Don't expect a lot and you might be pleasantly surprised. DD

    Hi
Not much I can add to the other 2 posts except when you keep a list also keep a note of what helps your pain and what hinders it.

    Thanks everyone,

I've been referred by my gp who suspects there's something not right with my neck as I'm getting alot of numbness and tingling into my arms and fingers. Do they just look at the one joint? I'm hoping he/she will look at my shoulders and wrists too-am I being too hopeful?

Magenta, I am sure if you explain all the things you are feeling at your appointment they will look at everything. Dont be scared to pour your heart out as there is nothing worse than leaving an appointment feeling that you didnt talk about everything that is bothering you. It takes so long to get these appointments that you have to make the most of it. Good luck xx

    Hi magenta

You can atleast mention your shoulders and wrists then atleast he is aware and if this isn't his speciality he may refer you or tell your gp to refer you to a different department.

    Good luck

These days most orthopaedic guys specialise. I used to see the orthopaedic surgeon - then I saw the hip man, the knee man, the ankle man and the hand man. Now that my lower joints are fully mechanised I see the same guy for both.

If you're being referred for your neck he'll may still be interested in shoulders but, I'd guess, not wrists.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

    Hi,

I'm hoping once I'm 'there' in the system, I'll maybe get referred onto other specialists. I'll soon find out.
