Awoke this morning new ankle looked slightly more swollen than most mornings. When I started walking every so often I could hear and feel it click, panic!

Since my consultant has a clinic at our local hospital every Tuesday decided to see if I could get an urgent appointment rather than leave it a week.Needless to say the 'phone was constantly engaged.

Decided to take a chance and drive to the hospital without making an appointment and fortunately got one!Never driven so far since my op,but needs must!

Actually saw the consultant himself, usually see the registrar. He explained the construction of hip, knee and ankle joints and the problem of making the relevant prostheses.
Apparently it takes time for the pad between the other two components to 'bed in' (the same prosthesis being used whether for the left or right ankle) and during this time there is slight movement and this is the cause of the click (this is also the case with knee replacements). The consultant said that he would be more worried if it didn't.

Basically everything appeared ok and no need to worry, panic over.So if you have a joint replacement and it clicks hopefully there is nothing to worry about.

Glad you managed to see your consultant Ron  and that everything with your new ankle is ok.

I had clicking with my new wrist replacement joint... when I turned the hand over it sounded and felt as though I had a ratchet in there! click click click!!
it gradually disappeared and now there's no noise/ odd sensations.

Well done to you for getting there and it's good to know that there is nothing amiss. I never knew that about replacements etc, so yup, I tool have learned summat (always a good thing). I think a general problem is that the specialists know their stuff inside out and assume that we know it too. We don't, and because we don't we don't know what questions to ask and when. I am glad it's OK tho, prefabkid - please send my regards to Annette and I hope she is keeping as well as she can. DD

    Hi DD
Have sent your regards to Annette,it's so nice that I can now drive and take her out in the car rather than her have to push me around in the wheelchair.
You are right in that specialists forget that we don't know as much about their subject as they do and therefore ask the relevant questions.
The forum is so supportive and a great place to pass on information.
Many thanks to all others who also posted.

    Hi Ron,

Glad you managed to see the consultant and get your mind put at rest.
Also glad to hear it's nothing to worry about.
Can understand the panic mode, your mind works overtime in those situations!
    Take care,
    Anita.

    Ron,

Glad it turned out to be normal. I must admit, I've had a couple of minor clicks too but tended to put them to the back of my mind. One thing my consultant told me was to expect a slight lateral movement in the joint which isn't something you experience with the MK1 version. They're a bit off putting too but I've kind of got used to them.

Having a bad day with my new ankle today but then again I have spent 3 hours washing my Land Rover Discovery which has been neglected since May. Certainly done my quota of calf stretches, leg lifts, squats and anything else the physios care to think of.... and the roof is still filthy

    All the best,

    Rob.

    Hi Rob
Sorry your ankle is giving you a bad time,my surgeon said it would tell me if I over do it,your's appears to be telling you the same!
Haven't attempted to clean my car yet,but did do it just before went into hospital so it will have to wait.
I'm still taking things gently but still progressing, hope things continue well for you.Don't over do it!
    Ron

Definitely number 2,I was a pathologist for many years. But ignore the person in the bed (must have been taken from one of our staff christmas parties they were a bit like that!!),I would be focusing on the flowers, probably recording symptoms......I was a plant pathologis, dealing with plant diseases lol.
