My twenty five year old daughter has been diagnosed with reactive arthritis after working abroad; possibly caused by a mosquito bite or salmonella. She was prescribed steroids and sulfrasalazine but has reacted badly to the latter. Now the doctor wants to put her on methotrexate but we are concerned about the side-effects, especially as she wants children in the next few years.

Has anyone had experience of methotrexate? We are getting a second opinion from a specialist but would also be grateful for any recommendations for consultants who specialise in reactive arthritis. Please email me privately at Thank you.

Suggest a PM would be more secure - Moderator Z

    Hi,

There is a post going at the moment that is about Methotrexate with lots of input from people on it (me included), the link is below:

Use the search box at the top to search for Methotrexate as there are always topics on here about it. I will also inbox you now. xx

Meth is nowhere near as scary as the web and other sources would have you believe. It can be a very beneficial drug if it suits the person taking it - but they won't find out until they take it. The patient is carefully monitored with regular blood tests in order to detect any trouble at the earliest - and also to detect whether it is helping or not, so your daughter must be conscientious about doing the regular blood tests (mine were fortnightly, then monthly, now two monthly). I have had very little trouble with it over the years (I am now on the injected version which I do myself) and I rarely think about it. I wish her well and I hope it helps. DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

    Hi

I do feel for your poor daughter and hope that she responds well to the MTX.

I have to say to her that most people do not have the symptoms you hear are possible the vast majority are pleased with the outcome.

Also we do have people on here who come off their meds to have babies so hopefully your daughter does not have to worry that she will be stopping her chances of conceiving right now. She can make that decision when she and her partner are ready.

For now if she is really suffering she needs some help and l am so glad she has such a caring Mum trying to find out all she can for her.

    Love

    Toni xx
