Hi all you lovely people.
....well I'm back after a rather long pre-op assessment day. :!: The knee orthos don't do things by halves do they?

I was ECG'd; BP ,Temp & pulse (twice)taken; they took blood/ urine tested and swabbed me in some unmentionable places  . I had my neck, spine and knee x-rayed from various angles.

Then I was examined within an inch of my being... they looked to see if I had any abrasions, examined lymph nodes. took doplar readings of blood flow to my feet and took a full medical history.

They now know me better than I know myself.

I met the knee surgeon Mr R, who is lovely! He told me that the x ray showed severe arther in all three bones that make up the knee joint and that I did require a TKR (I kinda knew that); also that he is going to scrape and resurface the Patella (knee cap) and cement in a silicone button at the back of it.

I've to stop my Biologic  until after the wound has healed, but not to stop the Mtx or any other of my meds  He has changed the date of the op as he wants me 'free ' of the Biologic for 6 weeks pre-op. I've to be admitted on Oct 5th, with the op being done on 6th. I'm first on the List for that day which is good.

I was very keyed up (couldn't say why?) so my BP was High, my ECG was running like a train and I had a pulse of 126. I looked calm on the outside though!

I am very grateful to you all for your support and good wishes... it really did make a difference to me. Cris pigeon was there with me.......with Wonky and Damsel hiding in the shadows. and I'm sure I heard munching noises coming from my jacket! :!:

Thanks all for being there for me. :!:

    Iris xx

ps... I rather like Philbert

Hey, what happens if we press the silicon button at the back of your knee, Dorcas? Do you go digital? Can I be first to have a crack at it please?

It's good they've been so thorough with the tests. I always find it very reassuring.

I found it not too bad when I'd to come off my meds before one of my hips. The good thing about these meds taking so long to work in the first place is that they can take as long not to work.

    With you all the way.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

    Hi Iris,
Sorry I wasnt on much yesterday....What a long appointment....still they were very thorough. That can only be a good thing..... can't it??
As for your BP.....mine is usually fairly normal but at my pre op {THR} it was sky high...she did it a few times and it was still the same. I had to go to the practice nurse {surgery} when I got home. She is used to my BP and said it will be OK it was only thre pre op....but she took it and took it and took it....and was shocked. All this time I was worrying that they wouldnt do the op. She sent me home with a BP monitor and I had to do it and record it myself for a week and take it back to her....thank goodness it averaged out OK.
Hope you are recovered from the pre op
    Love

    Hi Iris,

I am some glad they gave you a full overhaul even if it did take ages and no tea! Except the round robbin tea pot

They better look after you.....and they will/. Did you ask about the white stuff rather than the normal ga stuff?

That's the pre-op and now you know its going to be alright! They are really doing the best thing for you with the button and the evil one will soon be gone where it belongs!

Hey how about Gregory Grundgefuttock? We did that to my brother once... he was 16 and having the first of his leg ops

Your going to be fine my friend and they will take good care of you.

Oh the sheeps said they are sorry they didn't meant to munch a hope through your jacket pockets... should have lent you mine though its not the right thing for public display  Leaving a sleep well potion and buckets of anti-wind up, fortitude and stamina. Love, slurps, slobber, pocket riffles and a crescendo. Cris xx

    Hi everyone

Hi Tilly.. I was surprised I felt so tired after I got home  The 'evil one' took his revenge during the night.... and persuaded his brother to join in. I guess he knows his time is nearly up! I beat them down with a meds cocktail (prescribed of course!) and it's not so bad now:lol:

Marion... I'm now looking forward to the op and getting rid of some of the pain  .. I'm much reassured having met the surgeon and his registrar; both were really easy to talk to and went into a lot of detail about the op. So it's onwards and upwards.

Sticky.... you can be the first to press the button... if you can find it. You're right about the biologic remaining in my system and hopefully I'll be back on it lickety split after the wound heals. :!:

Hileena... yes I'm recovered thanks! I'm glad your raised BP didn't interfere with surgery.. but having to monitor it yourself for a week would have been stressful in itself.

Cris... big thank you for the potions, love, slurps and slobber   where else would you get such a diverse but effective pick me up :?:  .. not forgetting the best of all.. Tea! and more tea!
I didn't see an anaesthetist, so couldn't discuss getting the 'white stuff'. Guess I'll see him day before the op. I would have been happy to have a spinal, but they ruled that out because of previous back surgery.

The high winds have reached us... so I'll have to batten down the hatches. :!: Hope everyone stays safe if it's as bad as they predict it's going to be.

Ohh Iris, you do keep the NHS busy! I'm not surprised you are struggling to summon up stamina for yet another op BUT you can't go on as you are with the terrible knee pain and this will get rid of the dreadful pain. Less than a month away and you will be rid of the gnawing bone pain. Has the OT come up with an alternative for normal crutches that you can get along with?

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi speedy

how good to see you posting :!:
    how are you? and how's S :?:
Is your boss any nearer to understanding his obligations under DDA :?:

I've been lucky and already had a lot of OT input..... including 'gutter crutches' which take the pressure off the wrists completely, redistributing it to the elbows and forearms. Not good news for my right elbow which had surgery a few years ago.... but better than hurting Wally wrist and the other wrist/ hand operated on in May.

    ((((hugs)))) to you and S.xxxx

    Hi Iris

Only just catching up with all this, sorry to have missed pocket duties for the pre op, been in the wilderness with one thing an another lately!

Glad you were calm on the outside though, just sorry you have one op after the other to contend with and you do so with such bravery which puts me to shame. Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you in Oct and hope you have a good recovery. Let us know when you have decided on a name eh? Sending strength, courage and hugs ((( )))

    Hi Iris

Just catching up and wanted to say I am still thinking of you.

I am pleased you have your date for your op and will be thinking of you on the 6th oct....(hubbys birthday) so I can't forget ,
(if I haven't dropped in on those dates it is because I am in too) fingers crossed.

I wish you all the best for your op and hope you have a speedy recovery

    Dear Iris

Well, what a thorough examination, you made the staff work hard that day! It does sometimes feel like it is one op after another doesn't it? I am with you there, all the way, it sucks, but if it helps our mobility then onwards we must go. Thinking of you, my lovely,

    Elna x(())

Thank you Chris, Julie PF and Elna

Chris.... I know you have your own battles to fight and I'm sending you reciprocal strength , courage and ((hugs))....although I might just have kept some in my pocket to draw on  .
This is my fourth bones op in 2 yrs but I don't feel brave at all... I'm just determined to rid myself of some of the pain. and the Orthos in the hospital I attend seem just as focussed on doing that as I am. They are truly a very caring lot.

Julie...I am so hoping that your op goes ahead... you've had to wait such a long time  and been left in the lurch regarding dates for surgery...It's really unfair :x
So here's hoping we both get our ops  ...now that will make Xmas very special.

I'm completely undecided about a name... on the one hand I want to reflect how fierce the knees are (like the Kray twins   ), but on the other hand I'd want it to be a name that's friendlier & suitable for the 'new' knee(s) when they come along....

Elna... You are so right! the goal for both of us is to be rid of pain and to have greater mobility. So I'm definitely with you there.
I've read your thread and am amazed how, after the initial shock, you've been able to muster your resources and focus on the outcome and benefits of having the neck surgery.
It's a lesson, and you're an inspiration, for us all.

hope you are all having a good Sunday.... and your flower pots haven't blown away :!:

    Titan? Hercules? Atlas?

(I seem to be having a bout of the 'classicals'. Excuse me, Dorcas, I'll nip off and take something for it.)
