Hey.

Im going in to hospital a week today for midfoot fusion surgery a week tomorrow.

Im just wondering as my surgeon has said in the past that I am not allowed to take my anti inflamitries as the swelling is part of the healing process?

Is this the case as he has not told me to come off my tablets on my last appointment. My Dad is having a go at me telling me to come off them but I am worried about my non surgery side swelling up and being really painful.

Thank you.

    Hi there

It may have been mentioned at your pre op but if you have hearing problems you may not have taken this on board.

I think your best bet is to call your consultants secretary tomorrow or if there is anyone else at the hospital where you will be having the op that you think can answer your question. I remember that I did have to come off my anti inflams before my TKR but it may not be the same for you. As your dad says, you should find out asap. If in doubt I would come off them - better safe than sorry.

I wish you well with your forthcoming op - do let us know how you go on.

    Hi sailrib

I agree with Elna, best make a phone-call to the surgeon's secretary or the surgical ward that you're going into.

Surgeons have their own individual preferences... for instance my surgeon didn't want me to stop ant-inflams or Mtx when I had Wrist surgery... so, you can't guess or go by other's experience on this one, so please call.

wishing you lots of luck with your surgery! it'll be so worthwhile.

    Hi.

Thanks for the support, really helps.

I will ring today, my named nurse. She should be able to help me.

I properly have missed him saying come off them.

I missed him saying because one of the joints he is fusing is the talonavicular joint, it will stop the subtalar joint from working, which I didnt realise. They work together, I have been told.

I am so nervous about next week. My surgeon is a sailor who sails at my local club. It does really help the fact that he understand how much sailing means to me but he is making me nervous that he says I will really need my subtalar joint for sailing.

I feel stuck in the middle as I have not sailed in over a year due to the pain but my surgeon is saying that loosing my subtalar joint will make sailing much harder.

    Feel like screaming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course you are nervous about your forthcoming operation. It is perfectly natural to be so. It is the unknown. At least you know your surgeon and he is well aware of what sailing means to you. When you are well enough to start sailing again, it may well take time to get back into it, but where there is a will there is a way and I am sure you will get to enjoy sailing again and master it well.

I wish you all the very best, please do keep in touch

That is my goal from the operation is to get back into sailing but I may need another operation on my other foot first. I am hoping not though.
