Red hot knees late in the day.

Every day around 5pm once I’ve got home from the prison (work) I like to cook, but standing up around this time always makes my knees go red and hot, they also get really painful with a deep aching, once sit down for a while things calm down and so the cycle repeats.
Is this normal for OA of the knee or kneecaps to get like this after the work days over?, am I doing damage by forcing myself to carry on when their red and painful?.
Also if I force myself to push on with cooking it just gets more unpleasant and in the end I feel like pulling my hair out I also get snappy .

It sounds normal to me, mellman. I no longer cook standing, I sit. It's awkward but it means I can do more and for longer. Once you get back from work perhaps you could sit and rest up for a while to ease things and to give your poor knees a break, then tackle the domestic slavery bit. We have to find ways round these problems, our bodies forbid us doing what we have always done so we have to find new approaches. Take care, I wish you well and look after those knees of yours. DD

Hi DD thanks, thing is I love cooking but flippers stop even that!,I also get aching up in my thighs that comes from the top of both kneecaps and up into the upper legs guess it's the old OA spreading it's tendrils further.

    Hi mellman

Oh your knees sound vicious. I have PA not OA in my knees but I can still empathise with what you're going through.

I know you've had your knees 'looked at'... but I wonder whether you need re-assessed? in case the damage has spread and maybe the orthos could offer you an op :?:

Have you had any OT support mell :?: they can suggest or provide some aids to help in the kitchen.... perching stool, for example ...but there are lots of other devices . It might be worth a call . It's just not fair that arther is intruding on the things you love to do. :???:

    thinking of you..

Hi Val and Iris, yeah they get hissy most days I've had a scan a year or so ago and I was told I have chonderal stress changes, I had to google it but it means the femur cartilage is under attack from the exposed kneecap bone, thing is them going red and hurting in the afternoon is typical of them, I do use a seat for cooking but it’s really late at night that they give me most problems, and I am always really fearful of the neuropathic pain coming along, I’ve never been able to get a handle on it and the epilepsy drugs make me really ill so I have little defence.

have you thought about buying a perching stool? You can do a fair bit of preparation from those?

If l didnt l dont think l'd be able to cook half as often as l do

    Hi Mell

I've been thinking more about you and what you're going through.... Would it be a solution (albeit not ideal) for you to do most of your cooking on your days off and put the meals in fridge/ freezer ready for you to re-heat on your working days. :?:

That way you'd still be able to enjoy and benefit from cooking but without the awful grinding, evening knee pain .

    just a thought...

I would say that was normal. I have OA in the left foot and as the day goes on and especially if standing for any housework then it hurts and gets very hot.
It can be about 5 hours of painful rest before the pain subsides.

Did you try both gabapentin and pregabalin...if one doesn't suit then sometimes the other can...I know to well how awful the nerve pain is...hope you feel better very soon.
    Take care
