Diets, elimination of food or drink that help?

Hi all,
My husband is driving me mad on about how diet can help my AS, he read some stuff on net and now has a bee in his bonnet although I know he only trying to help (especially seeing me so bad over last few days).
I have Ankylosing Spondikutis and there is the Lonon AS det which I am going to look into on the NASS website but wondered if anyone on here had any thoughts. Would appreciate any feedback or anything positive for me and so can tell my hubby, so here are the questions:
Has anyone found anything which makes it easier?
Anyone had experience of not eating drinking anything and feeling better?
Any diet that helps (apart from normal healthy eating)?
Thanks in advance peeps, hubby walking a thin line with me at the minute. Xxx :evil xxx

No diet as such but basically my RA definitely improved once I stopped eating any meat.
Alcohol, apart from the odd glass, has always made it worse. I have made a lifelong study of this phenomenon and feel further research is still required as I like to be thorough. It might simply be that it prevents meds working well but I have tested it on virtually all. Oh well, back to the lab. My test drink for tonight will be Bitter & Twisted - again. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

This is a recurring question and it is like the meds: diet helps some, some think it helps and for some there is no difference. You won't know until you try. Finding the possible triggers can take some time but surely it's worth a shot. I wish you well in your experiments. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Thank you all for your input, intesting findings but think the alcohol would be hard to give up ha ha!
Cheese not a problem for me as I hate the stuff, even the smell.
To be honest I went through a stage about a year after being diagnosed where I followed the Margaret Hills Diet which is quite severe, it was nothing with acid, no cow, no pig, no sugar, choc, alcohol, processed foods, and many more things I can't quite remember now. It was also a lot of supplements, epsom salt baths three times a week, cider vinegar and honey drink three times a day and the only thing you could drink was apple juice or water. I went on it and lasted about three months, I must admit I lost weight and did have a couple of months pain free but it got too much to live with and it stopped working and you not allowed to take any medicaiton with it so was iin so much pain went back to the hospital and went on meds.
I can see where my husband coming from but he thinks its just as easy as stop eating a certain thing and you will be better. Looked into the AS diet and its a low starch diet again with no chocs, sugar etc. I am realistic and know NOTHING will stop this disease and just going along with it to keep others happy as I do most things in my life.
Oh well we will see what comes out of it, me being grumpy will be a definate if I can't have chocolate!
Thanks again Sticky, DD and Val xxxxAS Sufferer

Everyone is different on this one , some are helped , some aren't but here's my list anyway . No alcohol , no dairy , no citrus , no raw tomato ( cooked fine in moderation ) , no red meat , no potatoes , no aubergines . Having said all that it could quite easily be a psychological affect in my brain without any factual basis ; but it works for me ! Jillyb0

I wouldn't even consider - or trust - a diet that said no meds.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Jolly, thanks for that info - interesting. You are right the placebo effect can be very strong but if it works for you then stick with it. Xx
Sticky, I think at the time I was like a lot looking for a dream cure, looking back now very foolish but hey ho not the daftest thing I have ever done (we won't go there). XxAS Sufferer
